All roads lead to Airdrie for Aberdeen Women on Friday when they head to Lanarkshire for the SWPL 1 Play-off final against Queen’s Park.

The Dons topflight status is on the line at the Albert Bartlett Stadium, with Queen’s Park vying for an immediate return to Scotland's premier division.

The Spiders have earned their place in the final by coming through ties against Boroughmuir Thistle and Kilmarnock. They also won their final three regular season games to salvage a play-off spot.

Scott Booth

Aberdeen manager Scott Booth previewed our play-off.

“Training has been good after the Motherwell game. We’ve had a couple of positive results, and it’s all been focused on Friday.

“Initially we kind of thought it was going to be Spartans or Boroughmuir Thistle, then it was potentially Kilmarnock, then Queen’s Park, so we had watched all four games.

“Queen’s Park have done great. They’ve won five games on the bounce, and they deserve to be here. They will be tough to play against.

“They are a good football team; they want to play. They’ve got a couple of more experienced players, but they’ve also got a lot of youth in their team. A few loan players from bigger clubs as well.

“They are a good all-round side, in the game we watched at the weekend they caused some real problems for Kilmarnock. They rode their luck at times, but in these play-offs, you need a bit of luck.

“Ideally, you would probably like more time, given the game’s the Friday. Sunday is probably more reasonable in terms of your usual normal week, but it’s the same for both clubs.

“I think the majority of the season we’ve been underdogs; there are very few games we’ve played this season where we’ve been the favourites and we have to go and dictate the game. But I think the difference with this is it’s not really a normal game, is it? It’s a one off. It’s a game where both teams have it all to play for, the stakes are so high.

“We don’t want to go down. That is what it’s all about.

“We’ve trained with some real purpose on the way that we want to play. We were able to show the players what we want.

“We’ve tried to keep it as close to our normal sort of preparation, because the players are used to that now. But obviously, we want to make sure that we go out and get the win.

“The players need to be completely switched on, take on all the information. And then go on that pitch on Friday night, ready to battle hard and try and be better than their opposition player.”
