Stephen Robinson: You earn the right to play for Aberdeen

It was a case of ‘mission accomplished’ for Stephen Robinson as the Dons made sure they were mathematically safe from the play-offs, but he quickly turned his attention to producing a better Aberdeen side for next season. “First and foremost, what I came here originally to do was to make sure we're not near the play-off, which we looked like we could be stumbling into. We've managed to instil a mentality not to concede goals, and three clean sheets in a row at home is a real pleasing aspect of today. “On a sticky pitch, it was really, really hard to move the ball, and you have to face Dundee United's physicality from set plays and long throws, and that's something that Aberdeen haven't been able to do throughout the season. We were able to do that today. That was the reason for my team selection. “United have got three big boys at the back that cause massive problems. They score a lot of set plays. They've got Will Ferry who’s got a fantastic delivery and an incredible long throw, so they test you. We have not stood up to that test often enough this season, but we have done in the last six weeks. As I say, we picked the team accordingly today, and sometimes you get it right. Today, I think we got it right, but there's a lot of good play as well. “I thought young Mitchel did really well at Livingston, but Emmanuel's more physical. Jack gave us a physicality on the right and we won the first goal from it. Sometimes you've got to play certain ways to win games, and we managed to do that. “The game probably should have been over much earlier, but I'm delighted for Toyosi to get his goal, because he's been involved in everything. He causes absolute chaos, and I'm delighted that he got a goal. He showed the composure to set Stuart up for the first, and Stuart does what he does. He showed the composure he has and set us on our way, settled the nerves. “Everyone's still very nervous. This is a group of boys who have been criticised all season, so confidence just doesn't happen. Winning games helps. Keeping clean sheets and having togetherness helps, and I'm delighted that they've been able to prove perhaps people wrong, because I think everybody thought Aberdeen could be in trouble. We've managed to turn that around as a group, and now it's firmly setting our sights on next season. “When I came in, I said, ‘Look, the outside perception of you is this. It's not nice, but that's the outside perception.’ I told them what we thought and I've got the reaction. They've shown that when there's a common goal and a real steeliness to the team that we've got good players. Some will move on, some will stay. We have to get freshness into the squad. We have to be better than what we have been. Some have really impressed me. Some boys have really stepped up to the plate, so there's a lot of positives within that as well. “It took me maybe two weeks to see who could handle playing for Aberdeen, who could handle the pressure of the situation that we were in. We found boys that will step up and take the ball under pressure, defend when they need to. It's not the finished article by any stretch of the imagination, but if you can get a team not to concede goals, we've got creativity in the team, and there was a lot of good aspects today against a very difficult opposition. “The lesson is, for me, recruitment. We have to recruit boys that can play in the Scottish Premiership. That's easier said than done, because you don't know until you put them in the environment. But we have to lessen the risk and we have to try and get players that complement each other. We've already started that process, but I'll have a lot of focus on that going forward over the next couple of weeks. “But first, I'm looking to win the next two games. If people deserve to start, they'll start. We may look at a different system. We may look at different people. But it'll be because they've trained really well and they deserve to start. I don't think anybody should be given a free go in an Aberdeen shirt. You earn the right to play for Aberdeen. We've got expectations way, way higher than what has been achieved this season and it's for me to try and put that in place now. “In the training ground, it's night and day from when I walked in. It's hard. When you're not winning football matches and there's uncertainty at the football club, there has to be a direction. I would like to think I’ve given it a direction. The atmosphere has been good. The crowds have been excellent and I've had nothing but support from fans. “Winning football matches makes it easier to get an atmosphere. When they see a team, and we weren't brilliant by any stretch of the imagination today at times, but our reaction to giving the ball away, our reaction, pressing, fans want to see that. They know you can't play well every week, but fans want to see people running about. They want to see people going into tackles and coming out with the ball, winning headers, and then putting your stamp on it. When you can't do the quality, you have to do that bit. That's what I was really pleased with today.”
