Stephen Robinson | Falkirk Reaction

Stephen Robinson was pleased with the way his new team had taken on board the lessons of Friday’s training session, but promised there is much more to come from Aberdeen.

“We had one day to prepare for the game.

“We were organised against a very good Falkirk team. You have to remember the season they’re having.

“I’m here for a reason, because it wasn’t working, we’re getting beat 3-0 by a Championship side. There’s a lot of positives in terms of out of possession. In possession, we’re better than what we showed, but it’s a start. We’ll improve.

“We looked a lot more structured, but we should be much better on the ball than what we showed. In possession, we looked like a team that has lost five out of the last six games at times.

“If you have a structure, your better players then need to show the composure a lot more than what we did at times. That’ll come. We actually had two great chances from set plays, one cleared off the line.

Marko had two 1v1 situations that maybe we score from on another day.

“He’s a big threat, he’s a big boy, he can run in behind and he’ll get better with more games. He hasn’t had a lot of game time recently. That understanding with Kevin will get better. Kevin is a natural goalscorer, he sniffs things. But it comes from the press. That was what we worked on yesterday.

“Marko has got all the attributes to be a very good footballer. He’s a young boy still. He looks a big, big boy, but he’s still a young boy who hasn’t played a lot of football. There’s a really good player in there. Confidence is everything in football. If we can get him believing in himself, then we’ve got a really good partnership up front.

“I thought Liam Morrison had the best game he’s had for the Football Club. Geiger was excellent at times, he presses high, I want people to press, he comes from a background like that. Dylan was excellent, his energy, his enthusiasm, his quality at times. For a young, young boy, he was probably the most composed player on the pitch. But young players play without fear. They don’t carry the baggage like older players, so he was a breath of fresh air today.

“We worked on trying to be more organised, not concede goals, but we conceded at last at the end. We should be stopping the cross, and we got punished for that one error. Otherwise, I thought we looked really solid. We need to build confidence, and the way you do that is make sure you don’t get beat. We’ve managed to do that today.

“The boys have massively bought into the out-of-possession work and pressing. We went too long, too early at times. We should have had a lot more composure in possession, we’ve got the talent to do that. But sometimes when confidence isn’t high, you have to grind out results. We’ve ground one out today against a very good side.

“You’ve seen after the goal, confidence rises. People start playing a little bit more freely. But if we have that solid base, then the better footballers in the team will certainly play better than what they’ve done today. Next week’s a big week in training, we can work on more things, and we’re looking for improvements.”
