Reflections from Sunday

“There is every aspect of the game you work on. There’s not just one individual aspect, and it’s certainly not just front players. It’s defending as a team. It was too easy to play through.

“I said on Sunday that you concentrate on what you can control, and that’s certainly one aspect we can control: one aspect of that is the defending for the goal. We can deal with the situation much better. And then perhaps the focus isn’t on officials, it’s on what we can control, which I insist is the only thing we can worry about.

“It’s a tough test. It’s a tough fixture list. We knew that before the start of the season.

“So we go down there, as I say with every game, with lots to improve on.

"Good things came out of the game as well. There wasn’t a lot between the two sides when you look at Rangers, who have spent close to £30 million. There wasn’t a lot between the two sides.

“It wasn’t a super game by any stretch of the imagination. It was a typical blood-and-thunder Scottish game, which you have to do at times.

“As I say, I don’t think we’re very far away. There are bits that we have to be better at, and some bits that we’re happy with.”

The window

“I’d reinforce every position. I’m a selfish manager, so of course. But I’m not sure we’d be able to do that.

“We’ve brought in a lot of players, ten free transfers, three signings we’ve paid a bit of money for.

“If there was anything left, of course there are certain areas that I want to strengthen. We’ve got two wingers in the building. We’ve got young Andrew Fasanya coming through as well.

“If we bring somebody in, we have to be careful we don’t block younger players’ pathways, and they have to be significantly better, of course.

“But if there’s a chance to improve the squad, then yeah, definitely we’re still looking.”

Using the squad

“Yeah, of course, if they’re good enough and they train well enough (when asked if players out of the squad could work their way back in).

“They’re not involved for a reason. I have the luxury of seeing them every day, and if they’re not involved, then I don’t deem them to be good enough to be in the squad.

“I’ve never known a manager not put a player in a squad that would make sure you win a game or keep you in a job. So I do it quite honestly. I’ve been honest with all the players who I believe won’t be a part of what we’re doing going forward. And that’s tough conversations.

“But when the window closes, everyone has that chance. They have a chance every day in training, and if they step up and show us what talent they have, then of course they’ll be involved. I wouldn’t be stupid enough not to do that.”

Settling in

“Sometimes it takes players a little bit of time to settle in. With Ayoub Mouloua, the language barrier has obviously been a problem with the understanding, but he’s starting to come.

“Lewis Smith, we know, is a very good footballer. So anytime he’s come on, he’s made an impression and he’s certainly right in our plans going forward.”

Deadline day looming

“I’m not close to anyone coming in at the moment.

“I don’t know if that’ll be it, because the English window closes tonight. So things can change. Opportunities arise that perhaps we didn’t see coming, and we’ll keep an open mind to that if there’s money available.”

The challenge of Celtic

“A very tough challenge. They’ve got top, top players. They’ve consistently been the best team in the league for a long, long time now, and that hasn’t changed.

“Domestically they’ve been very good. It’s a tough game, of course.

"Anytime you go to Celtic Park and play against Martin’s teams, it’s going to be a tough challenge, and we have to rise to it.”
