Robinson era begins with a draw

Falkirk

ABERDEEN 1 FALKIRK 1 Saturday 14 March 2026 SPFL Premiership Pittodrie Attendance: 17,562 Referee: Calum Scott A performance full of energy and endeavour from Aberdeen saw then stop the rot and pick up a point in an even game that was high on application, if a bit short on quality. But the Dons failed to pick up three crucial points after conceding late on. Stephen Robinson made four changes to the Dons’ starting XI for his first game in charge. Topi Keskinen and Lyall Cameron were on the bench, with Tom McIntyre and Nicolas Milanovic absent from the matchday squad. In came Gavin Molloy, Dennis Geiger, Marko Lazetic and Liam Morrison. Per Kristian Bratveit was back on the bench, along with Ante Palaversa and Alexander Jensen. Graeme Shinnie played his 338th game for the Dons, putting him into the all-time top 20. Falkirk beat Dundee United 2-1 in the Scottish Cup last Friday, and named an unchanged side. In glorious sunshine, a bright start from the Dons was halted by a quick Falkirk break that triggered two corners in quick succession in the fourth minute, Aberdeen defending them well enough. A neat passage of play threatened to open the Bairns up in the ninth minute. The Dons were zipping the ball about down the left, but the final ball from Kevin Nisbet was just too strong for Geiger. Aberdeen were clearly determined to play as much of the game as possible in the Falkirk half of the pitch. A long run from Geiger into Falkirk territory won Aberdeen a first corner on the quarter hour, his cross cleared behind. It was a lovely ball in from the flag from Stuart Armstrong, Morrison up on his own at the back post. He didn’t get enough on the header, allowing Bain and his defenders to scramble the ball away, Shinnie the only one alert to the rebound. A big chance gone begging. Dimitar Mitov had to be alert on 18, a good low cross coming into the box from Tait, Mitov getting a strong right hand to it to punch clear. Miller wasn’t too far away in the 29th minute, a curling effort from the edge of the area deflected over by Jack Milne. An Armstrong corner caused chaos again on 37. Lazetic chested it down but he pulled his shot across the face of goal. It was jabbed clear by a defender, and Geiger, coming onto it 25 yards out hit high and wide into the Red Shed. The Dons had an escape in added time, a Falkirk corner reaching Spencer in space 16 yards out. He caught his shot beautifully, but Milne was able to make a crucial block to leave the sides goalless at the break. HALF-TIME: ABERDEEN 0 FALKIRK 0 Falkirk started swiftly after the break, Broggio darting into the area and improvising a shot with the outside of his right boot, Mitov equal to it with a good save at his near post. Next, Tait had a pop from 25 yards on 53, Mitov getting behind the shot. The Bairns were just beginning to find their rhythm at this point. They were close to the opener in the 57th minute, playing through Aberdeen, eventually working the ball into Yates around the penalty spot. He swivelled and got a shot away that was deflected just wide of goal. There was more danger at the corner but the Dons scrambled it away. There was a triple swap for Aberdeen, Palaversa, Cameron and Toyosi Olusanya joining the fray in the 61st minute, Armstrong, Shinnie and Lazetic the trio replaced. The Bairns responded with two changes of their own eight minutes later, Ross and Cartwright on for Tait and Broggio. From nowhere, the Dons were in front on 73, tribute to the energy that Aberdeen had put into the game. Henderson’s back pass to Bain was chased down by Kevin Nisbet, the goalkeeper clearing it against the striker. It looped towards goal and Nisbet was quickest onto it to nod in from three yards out. Williams replaced Yates in the aftermath. Nisbet went in the book on 80 minutes for bundling Ross over on halfway. Alexander Jensen then replaced Mitchel Frame while Falkirk brought on Graham for Miller. Sivert Heltne Nilsen was on for Geiger four minutes later. After all that touchline activity, the Bairns were level in the 89th minute. Some 35 yards out, Ross came inside from the Falkirk left and curled in a teasing ball to the back post. Stewart rose above Molloy to win the header and planted it into the net, Mitov left helpless. Five minutes of injury time came and went without any more chances. A drew was a fair result but the Dons let two points slip.
