Monday night football retruns to Pittodrie

“We’ve had a couple of very strong back to back results in the Premiership over the last couple of weeks and we fully intend to build on that with another positive result and performance against Patrick Thistle on Monday evening.

“We are all very well aware that that won’t be easy. Alan Archibald’s side has made a good start to their return to this division and they came very close to upsetting Celtic at Firhill last Sunday. We can take some confidence from the fact that we beat them in Glasgow in our first meeting this season, but that result will mean very little as we take to the field on Monday night. We will have it all to prove again and we are well aware that we will need to match the standards we have set in our last two league games if we are going to complete a hat-trick of Premiership wins.

“We really begin to get into the thick of the season now, with just one more international break prior to Christmas. The games come thick and fast from here and though we are pleased to have got ourselves into a good position in the early part of the campaign, it is no more than a start.”

“Partick have made a good start to their first season back in the top flight and they will be looking to continue that progress on Monday tonight.

“This is a really important game for the club because we’ve managed to get ourselves into a good position in the Scottish Premiership over the first quarter of the season, but now we need to capitalise on it.

“There have been a couple of false dawns in previous seasons where things have appeared to be going in the right direction, only for us to fall away from those standards and end up having a really disappointing end to the campaign. It’s really important that we don’t allow that to happen again and that we continue in the same vein that we have started the season.

“That’s why it’s been especially pleasing that we’ve won the last two league games and the Motherwell cup game after the setback of being beaten by Ross County. That’s the kind of result that might have knocked us off track in the past, especially with a big game against Dundee United to follow it.

“What we all have to remember is that it is only a start though. There are still areas where we need to improve if we want to stay where we are at present and to keep on challenging for a top six finish and perhaps even more than that. What has been helpful in recent weeks is that guys like Willo and Barry are coming back from injury and obviously, the more options the manager has when it comes to selecting the team, the better it will be for the club.

“Experience like theirs is so important not just because of what they can do on the pitch but the way they help the young players around them. There is a lot of exciting young talent at this football club, but all of us need help when we first come into first team football and that’s what people like Barry, Mark, Willo and, hopefully, myself, can provide for them.”
