Scottish League Cup Round 2 | Pittodrie | 7.45pm KO | FT

It looked like being another of those nights at Pittodrie as the Dons once again were taken to penalties by a lower league side in a cup competition. This time though there was a different storyline. After five excellent penalties by both sides, Jamie Langfield made a great save and Mark Reynolds was able to step forward, find the net and put the Dons into the next round.

Aberdeen played very well in the first half but were unable to take any of their chances. Paul Hartley’s Alloa side were very well organised, also played some good football and grew in confidence as the game went on. In the second half Willo Flood pulled up with a hamstring injury and then Jonny Hayes was carried off after a suffering a serious head knock. The Dons had to regroup with a number of players playing out of position. There were few chances at either end throughout the rest of the game and extra time as things became very tense. The Alloa players deserve credit for defending brilliantly.

In the penalty shoot-out McGinn scored the Dons first and he was followed by Low, Pawlett, Jack and Vernon – all very well taken spot kicks. Doyle was the unfortunate Alloa player who had his penalty saved before Reynolds scored the winner. The Aberdeen players had to dig deep tonight and they deserve credit for doing so.

In the end there was a feeling of relief around the ground.

We will have an update on Willo Flood and Jonny Hayes tomorrow.
