This weeks main interview is with Jamie Langfield

Four games in a row without conceding a goal, three of them in the league, at any time that would be cause enough in itself for celebration, but in the case of Jamie Langfield, Aberdeen’s stalwart goalkeeper, they are just that bit more meaningful because they have taken him to the brink of history.

…”I’d love to break the record, and then set myself the next little goal. It is a big achievement to get close to the record as I am not an Old Firm goalkeeper. If you look at the guys up there at the top of the list, every other keeper has played for Celtic or Rangers. It is something that I am very proud of at a club I have loved playing for. To break the record would be a feather in my cap, but a lot of it is down to the boys in front of me.

…”It is probably the most I have ever enjoyed playing football. The 2007 UEFA Cup run was completely different. Like a lot of people at the Club, I probably did not fully appreciate what was happening at the time. I appreciate it a lot more now because of what happened to me with my illness a couple of years ago. I am just thoroughly enjoying it.

…”What has the manager has brought in a level of professionalism and organisation on and off the park. The manager and Tony have put a massive emphasis on the sports science side of things. They have brought in Graham Kirk to take that a level further and although he has only been here for a short period of time, he has been absolutely brilliant.

…”We have no excuses because of the way we are looked after at this club. We have all the products, kit, equipment, food and drink needed to help with our recovery after a game, the weights and gym sessions – everything is tailored to your needs.

….”There is also a great amount of video work done. On a Friday at away games, our Video Analyst has everything ready for the team meetings but you can also then go and sit down and look at your individual match analysis. Every week, I sit down with Greig Thomson our Performance Analyst and Jim Leighton and go through the game from the Saturday. It allows you to look at your mistakes, your flaws and your good bits. It is something that has come into football so much. We also use the Prozone software which goes into an incredible amount of detail.

…”The very small details are so important. The manager does not want any excuses. When we walk out onto the pitch, he knows he has done everything possible for each of us to be in the best shape and to be prepared as best we can. If you then get beat, we as players can have no excuses. The AFC FPs Interview Gavin Rae

At the end of 2012 you signed for your boyhood heroes, Aberdeen, despite interest from other clubs. What were your thoughts as you walked through the door to sign for the club?

It had taken so long to get there, but it was brilliant! I had supported them when I was a kid and trained with them without getting the opportunity to sign with them when I was a youngster, so working my way back, it was brilliant.

I loved my time there, it was great to get the chance to play for them and to have my family come to watch me play was brilliant.

Not content with going back to Dundee, you have also joined up with David Weir at Sports Careers. What can you tell us about that?

Well, Sport Careers is a business dedicated to people in sport, helping them to achieve the next step in their careers. I am just glad to help out and hopefully I can assist the business through the number of contacts that I have in the game. Any advice I can give to help, I will.

I always wanted to be involved in something maybe in a coaching capacity after I had hung up my boots, that’s why I did my UEFA A and B coaching badges, but when this came along it was a fantastic opportunity to get involved with and if we do go to Australia next, then maybe we can branch out there too.

The Young Dons feature is on

“It is strange as I was expecting the same kind of season as last year. Finishing second last year, I thought we would just start where we left off last season but it has not worked out that way. I was not being complacent but I thought if we just kept doing what we were doing, we would be ok. We were a bit unlucky in a number of the games at the start and lost a couple of late goals.

“Psychologically, it got to us a bit and then we started slipping up in other games. In training though we have been working hard and we have started to turn things around. No one likes losing games but it has again been a good learning curve for me and the boys. It has shown that you have to earn the right to win games. You can’t just turn up and expect to get the three points”. AFC Sticker Collection
