“For me personally, to grab a goal was a big confidence boost for myself. My form has kind of gone how the team’s form has gone so far this season. It has been a little bit up and down at times. My performances have not been as consistent as I would have liked. In some games, I have not been as influential as I want to be. The goal and the assist in the Motherwell game just brings the confidence and belief that you can go out and influence games.”
Findlay Marshall
“It took a long time to get a start here, but I’ve always trusted the process, and now I feel like it was probably a good thing that I had to wait that bit longer. Looking back, I think it probably has helped because I do feel ready now. Maybe if I’d got chucked in earlier, it might have been different. So I feel like in the long run, it’s worked out perfectly.”
Stuart Armstrong
“The turnover was quite big over the summer. Some of the boys have never played in Scotland before, there are different languages. You can’t just click your fingers and say, ‘By the way boys, this is our identity so let’s all just do that.’ It takes time to build relationships. That’s why it’s so important for us as a group to have that belief and remain focused on what we’re trying to do.
“I think us as a group, we are just looking to refine what we’re trying to do. We have a vision, but it’ll only become pleasing for everyone when it comes through and we start to pick up more wins. It does take time. You can’t just implement it overnight and say, ‘This is how you’re going to play,’ and it happens the next game.”
Daniel Klein
“I spoke with Lutz because I knew him from Hoffenheim in the past. He gave me a very good feeling about the club and my part here, and I liked the things he said. We spoke about the past, about the German goalkeeper school, about everything. From there, this felt like a good place for me to be. He told me I would love it here, the city, with really great people.
“I had a few options but I really enjoyed my week on trial here too, and that helped me be confident that this would be a good place for me to work and develop. It was a very good few days. I hope I did good! I liked it because I got to know some players here, and they helped me to get into the way of the dressing room. Everyone made me feel very welcome. The team was very good to me because it was like a little family. The standard of training was very high.
“Through the week, I really enjoyed working with Craig Hinchliffe our goalkeeping Coach and the other goalkeepers. Marius was pushing me and the whole goalkeeper team. He’s a very good person in the training and off the pitch. Every goalkeeper is a little bit crazy on his own but Marius, maybe a bit more! He’s a very good goalkeeper. I love to work with him because of his personality. In training we are friends, but we push each other to help us both get better.
“Being a goalkeeper is a difficult position. You have to wait. You have to be patient. And of course I don’t want anything to happen to Marius, but I need to ready to help the team.”
The Q&A is with Nesta Guinness-Walker, and there are columns from the Manager, Captain and Niall McGinn. Plus, our usual extensive history features and stats section.
Competition
We have two signed AFC strips to be won! We have a home strip and the new third kit, both were signed by the players at Cormack Park this week. Two lucky envelopes will be placed in the programmes on sale around the ground or in the club shop. Good luck!
George Murdoch
A number of months ago the programme editor was approached by the family of George Murdoch to see if we could help.
On September 29 1983, Aberdeen taxi driver George (Dod) Murdoch was murdered in the Cults area of the city, on a Thursday evening.
No one was ever caught. Now, decades later, the hunt has intensified. A massive £50,000 cash reward and cutting-edge DNA technology are closing in on the killer. The Red Matchday team have joined forces with the family of Mr Murdoch and the Police to try and help. We also tell the story of how Aberdeen Football Club became involved with the case back in October 1983.
Your memories could finally bring justice to Dod and resolution to his family, knowing that, after 43 years, their loved one can finally rest in peace. Robina McKay, the wife of George Murdoch’s nephew Alex, writes a personal letter to all our readers.
