Reaction | "a bit more quality needed today"

Stephen Glass was characteristically honest in his assessment of the Dons’ 1-1 draw with Ross County this afternoon. “We had so much possession, we were carrying a threat, but I think if we’d had a bit more quality about us today, then it’s a different outcome. So that is a frustration. “I think we were creating chances throughout so I was always hopeful the equaliser would come. In saying that, I was delighted with how the players kept going and believing in themselves that a goal would come.

I’m happy we’re still unbeaten but obviously frustrated that we didn’t turn our possession into a win.”

Three of last week’s new signings were given their chance to make their mark on the afternoon at Pittodrie.

“Austin did really well, he was positive, direct, he even turned a couple of clearances into opportunities for us which is a little bit different to what we’ve had before. That pace and that energy up front was exciting for us, he’s a real forward thinking player.

“We would have liked Matty to be a wee bit higher up the pitch, especially first half, but it was difficult for him coming into a game having only been here a short time – it tends to be easier for a forward in those circumstances.

“Marley came on late in the day because we felt we couldn’t get much more time out of him physically, but he’s here long-term and will get fitter and stronger in the coming weeks.

“It’s a new group we have and they’re coming together and finding out about each other. Because of the schedule we’ve had, particularly with six European games, we’ve not really trained since the season started because we’ve played and then rested and recovered, travelled, played again.

“We can put that right now, the schedule will be Saturday to Saturday for a while ahead, and it’s important we take advantage of that schedule and get some good work done on the training pitch.

“We want to be as dominant as we were today, but we want to score more goals and keep them out at the other end as well. We’ve a chance to put some work in and we hope that bears fruit. When we worked with the team through pre-season, it was beneficial and it’s important that happens again in this next period.

“Christian has done a lot of unselfish work for the team in recent games without getting a reward, so I was pleased he scored today. He will benefit from work on the training pitch, not just him personally but as a group, so that we are creating more and better opportunities at the top end.

“We are a work in progress. We’ve let in more goals than we’d like, but we’ve looked more threatening as a team compared with what was happening at the end of last season. We’re more positive as a team and it’s important that that continues. We’re unbeaten in the league and we’ll try to maintain that as long as we can while trying to win a bigger share of them.”

The rigours of gaining international clearance meant that David Bates was never going to be available today, but Glass is delighted to have him on board.

“David will be a good addition. He’s a top centre-half with pace and power, he’s a Scottish international and he’ll be a big part of the future of this club. He’s the right age and profile, so we’re looking forward to working with him. For him, he’s got a place to settle and play and show what he can do, and that’s important for him.”
