Rangers Post Match | The Manager

Derek McInnes “There was no real indication that the game would finish like that. “I thought we were the better team throughout. I thought we started the first half better and then the later part of the first half was untidy. At half-time I was keen to stress the message that we needed to play more and show more of an attacking threat. I don’t think we offered enough in the final third and whilst we looked comfortable throughout the game, we did not look in any real danger of losing a goal, I wanted more from an attacking sense. “I thought we did that in the second half.

“There was no real indication that the game would finish like that.

I thought we took complete charge of the game. Their goalkeeper has made a couple of good save, one in particular from Rooney. We were contemplating changes around the 70-minute mark but I felt there was no need. I thought we were in control of the game.

“Like a lot of games when teams sit in against us at home, we have found a way to get a late winner and it felt it was going to be a similar scenario to that.

“But you need to concentrate against good players. We need to do that for the full 90 minutes.

“We lose a very poor goal which can happen but it was the response to losing the first goal which I was more disappointed with. There was still plenty of time in the game. We were still the dominant team and we ultimately lost the game after a crazy four or five minute spell.

“When you give someone the quality of Kenny Miller a little half chance then you expect to be punished. We are disappointed with the first goal but I am more disappointed with the reaction after it to be honest. We have enough experience.

“We don’t lose many goals at Pittodrie and we don’t normally go behind. It is important that the players deal with that situation better. It is something we have spoken about. Hopefully that will help us in the challenges ahead.

“I think it is important we still carry that confidence (we had heading into the game). I have got confidence in the players. I thought for the majority of the game we looked the better team. We looked a team who were better than Rangers today. They were making changes to try and find a foothold in the game but I thought we were in charge. As I say I did not think there was any need for us to make the changes.

“The game was being played out like a lot of the home games we have had this season here and we have found a way to win. Today we played our own part in our downfall. We gifted Rangers the three points.

“We were the better team but ultimately Rangers got the result they wanted and we did not get the result we wanted.

“We have six league games left and we have to make sure our response is the same as it normally is. Our response to a defeat is normally followed by a winning run and hopefully we can start that next Saturday.

“I think the referee probably dealt with the game well to honest. It is up to others to question whether Garner needed to make the challenge with Joe.”
