Dons boss Derek McInnes felt his side failed to recover from the setbacks of Partick Thistle’s early second-half strikes, but said the travelling support should not be too downhearted.

He said: “Credit to Thistle. They deserved the win and were much more clever than us in the last half-hour.

“The players were desperate to get right back in it. They are used to winning, but we have no divine right to win all the time.”

McInnes was frustrated, though, at what he saw as poor decision-making by referee Alan Muir when he denied the Dons a second penalty.

He said: “For me there were two pivotal moments in the first half.

“Obviously things would have been different if Barry had scored his penalty.

“But then after that Paul Gallacher has come out running, it was a clumsy challenge on Adam Rooney, and he was the last man so I thought he should have been sent off.

“So we have to make amends, starting with the match against Celtic on Tuesday.”

Thistle manager Alan Archibald urged his team to kick on after overseeing a first home victory in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday afternoon.

A second-half goal blitz helped Thistle secure an impressive 3-1 triumph over in-form Aberdeen.

Archibald felt it was a display full of character, and was keen to see more of the same in upcoming games.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” he said.

“We showed great character in the second half after a first half when we appeared nervous and not passing the ball well.

“We’ve got to go on from this and continue to show more belief and character. It’s a big lift for us that we have also moved up a place in the league table.”

Strikes from Conrad Balatoni and a double from Lyle Taylor sunk the visitors, after a goalless first half in which Barry Robson saw his penalty saved.

Archibald enjoyed watching the goals go in, but admitted he felt a little nervy as well, having seen the Jags surrender a two-goal advantage at Motherwell last weekend.

He said: “It was hard to celebrate after the goals, as you don’t know what’s round the corner.

“But I’m delighted with the win. We worked all week with Lyle turning and running at their centre-backs and it paid off today.”
