Niall scored his 50th league goal for the Dons this afternoon. After the game he spoke to RedTV and the media:
“Personally, I was delighted to see the ball hit the net. I am pleased with my start to the season, that is my fourth goal. It is a great milestone to have hit my 50th league goal in my fifth season but the most important thing was winning the three points and we are very disappointed we did not do that.
“We were frustrated at half time, we created a few chances but we didn’t feel as fluent as we can be. I thought we didn’t move Inverness as much as we would have liked and that’s what the manager said to us. At half time the manager just wanted us to be more of a goal threat going forward, getting the ball up the pitch, getting the ball in behind using the pace of Wes Burns, myself and Jonny Hayes.
“In the second half we get the goal at a nice time, but it’s obviously it is very disappointing to throw away two points.
“We showed in the first 10 minutes of the second half just what a good side we can be, we created chances and once the first goal goes in you think it’s all going to plan. I think we needed that second goal just to kill the game off and if Wes Burns’ chance goes in I think it’s a different story.
“Credit to Iain (Vigurs) it was a great strike.
“We know that we need to be winning these games.
“It’s early in the season, we are still gelling as a team. New faces have come in and I think in periods we are playing well.
“Obviously it’s about keeping a clean sheet and taking our chances when they come along. As players, we’re frustrated and I’m sure the manager is as well so we just need to get back to the training ground on Monday and just keep working on things.
“It’s still early in the season, but we need to get things up and running as quickly as possible.
“On the park we need to be doing more to kill teams off. We need to be taking more of our chances. We will continue to work on things behind the scenes and the performances will come and more importantly so will the results.
“We will focus on ourselves. We need to keep improving as a team. It is early in the season and there is still a long way to go. It is about getting momentum and once we get that we can then push on.
“We have a tough week coming up but it is a week that could quickly get our confidence back on track. Away to Dundee is always a tough game but there is always a good atmosphere and we know the Red Army will travel in numbers to that one. Then we have St Johnstone at home in the cup followed by Rangers on the Sunday. It is an exciting week for the club and a week for us to hopefully gain confidence and gain momentum.
“We have an important weeks training coming up. We need to take the positives from today, look at what we need to work on and then move on.
“If we had of taken a few of our other chances things could have been very different today. A slight positive is that we did not get beat but it is definitely two points dropped.
“We go again next Sunday.
“Losing Ryan and then losing Graeme today is disappointing, they are both a big loss, but it is part of the game. We are at a big club and there are players who can come in and do a good job.
“Having Jonny back is massive. Since I have been here he has been a pivotal player for the team. It was also important to get Peter back. We have people fighting for positions and we need that but we also need to gel as a team.
“Hopefully sooner rather than later we will have a fully fit squad.
“James Maddison is obviously a huge talent. He has been training well all week. He is very comfortable on the ball. He sees passes in the top end of the pitch. He is confident young boy who likes to get on the ball. We are delighted to have him in our squad.”
