This is what Derek had to say to the press after the game
“I thought there were enough spells during the match to be pleased about. In the first half we scored a very well worked goal from a set piece again which is pleasing, that should have settled us down but we had to change our shape slightly as Livingston were getting it a bit too much their own way in terms of passing the ball.
“We had them watched and we knew that we would have our work cut out to make sure that they didn’t enjoy the game too much. I think once we changed our shape it was a bit easier but then we were causing ourselves problems by being a bit slack and sloppy. We reinforced the message at half-time that there was still work to be done and that we had to get a better level of performance from everyone to get into the next round.”
“Although Livingston had bits and pieces at the start of the second half I thought from there on in we were really dominant and once we got the second goal it knocked the stuffing out of them a wee bit. When we got the third goal the tie was effectively over but we knew that we had a tough match on our hands tonight and I think 4-0 is a bit harsh on Livingston.”
On Adam Rooney
“His goals were very confidently taken and he is obviously very pleased with his hat-trick as we all are. He has come back into the team on Saturday and got his goal and there are very few better than Adam in and around the penalty box, he is a real predator and he showed real quality with his finishes tonight.”
“There was a lot of other good performances tonight, in the first half they were mostly defensively as Ash Taylor and Mark Reynolds were excellent throughout. In the second half we got far more good performances which was required to get the job done.”
On Ryan Jack
“We don’t know how he is yet.
“It is obviously a real concern at the minute because it is a follow through from a challenge and on the inside of his knee there is a bit of damage there. We will see how he is tomorrow and get that scanned and looked at properly. If I sound subdued tonight it is because of that, I am delighted to get through with a good performance and another clean sheet but we are all hoping that it is nothing too serious for Ryan.”
On recent home performances
“The last three home games have been 2-0, 3-0 and 4-0 – we have been scoring goals and equally as pleasing is the clean sheet again tonight. Scott Brown came in for his debut tonight and made a couple of good saves early on and although he wasn’t so busy in the second half it is good for him to get his clean sheet and feel part of the squad. Clean sheets were a bedrock of a lot of our good work last season and if we are going to have a successful campaign we will need to have something similar.”
