in the League Cup – the history

Previous meetings with Motherwell in the League Cup have traditionally been close affairs.

In the early years of the competition, it was the Lanarkshire club that held the upper hand when the competition was in the Sectional stages.

In the last 20 years the sides have clashed on four occasions with Aberdeen just holding the edge with three successive wins in 1993, 1995 and 2002.

However in the last meeting in the League Cup Aberdeen went down 1-0 to Motherwell at Fir Park after an early Kerr goal settled a poor match as Dons Zander Diamond was sent off.

The Dons most convincing win came in a 4-0 win at Pittodrie in 1962, while both Aberdeen legends Jimmy Mitchell and Paddy Buckley made their debuts for the Dons in the meeting at Fir Park in August 1952.
