Barry Robson was understandably delighted with the 2-0 win over Rangers this afternoon, but he was quick to deflect praise away from himself when he spoke to the press afterwards.

“It’s the best I’ve heard Pittodrie in a long time and the boys responded by giving everything they could. It’s a big win and a big performance and the players and the fans deserve to enjoy that tonight.

“There is a gap between Celtic and Rangers and the rest of us, of course there is. The financial gap is huge so you need to try and find a way to win those games, especially at home. The players did that today and they deserve all the credit they get.

“I wanted us to be aggressive, to press them, to get after them, and that wasn’t easy in the first 20 minutes especially with them coming out of their formation. Once we’d worked that out, we started to trigger the press well, made the uncomfortable and from then we were quick on the transitions, which is when we’re at our best. It’s not always easy to go and do that against a talented team, but we started being aggressive the last 20 minutes of the first half and carried that into the second half, when I thought we were outstanding.

“We put high demands on the players and they want to respond to that. Running and working hard should be a given but we work on so much more than that. We’re forward thinking in what we try to do.

“We put demands on the fans too, we need them and they have been outstanding, home and away, they’ve been so good. This is a great club to play for, I’ve told the players that. It’s a big club, ambitious and it’s one where the fans expect a lot. But if you give it, look what they give you back.”
