Aberdeen boss Stephen Robinson was pleased to see his side get off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory at Brora Rangers.
“It’s job done at the end of the day. We had was so much possession, and they sit very, very deep. It's difficult to break any team down nowadays when they sit that deep.
“Their goalkeeper was excellent, they defended really well, so you've got to give credit to Brora. All credit to them and their manager as well. They were very well organised. I thought their fitness levels were tremendous for a Highland League side.
“But that said, the game should have been out of sight at half-time. Ultimately though, these games, you just need to win. I lost the first one last year at Arbroath, and we were determined to make sure that didn't happen. The disappointing bit for me is we haven't gone and taken seven or eight of the chances we had in the first half. That'll come as the sharpness comes.
“Then the second half, you're just trying to wear them down. We had quite a few chances that we didn't take. But ultimately, you look at the results tonight, these are hard games. The pitch is sticky, it's bobbly. Moving the ball on a really sticky pitch and trying to get people to take two touches and deliver balls, it's not complicated, but that's easier said than done.
“I’ve won this competition, but I don't like this format of the league. You're still in the process of building your squad. You're expected to come in and win by five or six, and that's not how it usually happens on these sticky surfaces.
“But the amount of chances we created over the last two games is really refreshing. Now we have to start finishing those off. You won't get all those chances in bigger games, so we need to be more clinical.
“Kevin got a couple of goals for his persistence. He keeps getting in there. And if you keep getting in there as a striker, you'll score goals. He's clinical. He's taken his penalty nice and composed. He probably feels he could have had more, but ultimately, it's enough to win the game.”
