“I think it's disappointing that we've not managed to get a win tonight.
“I think it's clear that they're a decent side as we said before hand and I think they thoroughly deserved a draw. They possibly had the better chances to get the second goal.
“We thought, in the initial part of the game and probably either five or ten minutes each side of our goal, I thought we played some decent stuff.
“We got after them, we got the crowd into it and we had a couple of chances. I remember a Rooney's header, Mackay-Steven went round the keeper and I thought we had the potential to go on and get the second goal at that stage.
“Tactically I thought they were very good. I thought they filled the central areas and we needed to play in the wider areas a bit more. I think when Gary (Mackay Steven) went off we lost a wee bit of that and understandably we're still a wee bit behind where we want to be at this stage. It was always a concern for us, we gave the players three and a half weeks off but we knew we were coming back to a different level of opposition.
“Normally we go into that first round and as challenging as that is sometimes we've normally been quite comfortable getting through that and we've used those two games to get into this one (in the second round) and I think it was still clear tonight that we've still got a bit to go.
“There's no criticism of the players, I think it's still clear that we're going to get better as we go along. I think we'll be better for having the minutes under our belt and the game is still in the balance. It's half time, we've had a lot of our better results in Europe on the road and we'll go there positive and confident. Hopefully we can bring a better performance and we'll be better having had those minutes tonight going into that game.
“There were some positives, but it's clear there are still a lot of players short of where they need to be, but this is all part of us getting that understanding and that fitness that we need to try and put opposition under pressure and I thought when we did have that energy and when we did get after them we caused them problems and we aim to try and get a better result next week.
“It is clear that we were way off what we are capable of. But we still had chances. What we did not have was the element of control. The way they set up, they were always able to apply that pressure. We needed to do our better work in the wider areas. I still thought we were too eager to play through the middle where they had all their bodies.
“They actually lined up in the exact same shape as we did when we were over in Rijeka. You could see on the counter attack that they gave us moments of anxiety. We just chose to play the wrong pass. But that gets better from getting that understanding when we get more games under our belt. There will then be better decision making from certain players. We needed to play in the wider areas a bit more and put that pass in to play forward instead of trying to play through the middle all the time where they were strong.
“Gary Mackay Steven is the type of player that the fans will enjoy. I think he showed flashes of that tonight. I think it was clear that he had run his race when he came off but he was a threat for us. He is a ball carrier. Scott Wright is another one who can do that for us but he only had one day of training. Scott and Gary are going to be important for us this season.
“I think all the new boys did fine and they will get better. I think Christie’s goal was terrific. It was a good counter attack. Joe had clocked Ryan and it was just a matter of whether he could find him. It was a perfect weight of pass. Ryan still had a lot to do and he was really positive. It shows the quality is there, we just did not show it enough tonight.
“I thought Tansey showed he is going to be a good player for us and like everyone else will get better as he goes along and Gary I have spoken about.
“At the minute there is no news on any signings.
“Motherwell revealed there was a bid for Louis Moult. We were not going to talk about it. I can confirm we put a bid in last week and it was rejected. There has been nothing since then. There has been no further correspondence.
“We have had a few bibs and a few enquires in for several players.
“We concentrate on what we need to do for now. We hope we can get a defender in over the next few days but we go with what we have for next week.
“We have been here before with players potentially signing and a lot of things can go wrong and you don’t get them. Happy to speak about any player once we get them in the building. We have looked at a few options and we are quite specific with what we are looking for. Hopefully we will have some more news over the next few days.”
