The Dons were well represented for the national team last night, but a new-look side were comfortably beaten 2-0 by World Cup-bound Peru in Lima. Scott McKenna was once again at the heart of the defence with Graeme Shinnie on the bench. Kenny McLean and Ryan Christie, who had both earned their call ups through their work with The Dons this season were also involved in the squad.
Despite their inexperience, Alex McLeish’s men played well in spells during the first half, but were undone just before half time when McKenna blocked a shot with his arm in the box after goalkeeper Jordan Archer’s poor clearance went straight to a Peruvian player. Cueva buried the spot kick and the hosts effectively killed the game off after the break when Farfan scored from close range. Aberdeen captain Graeme Shinnie was then given his long-awaited debut in the dark blue jersey with 15 minutes to go replacing Dylan McGeouch in the midfield alongside his former teammate McLean.
