Barry Robson was delighted to see his Aberdeen side make it into the Quarter-finals of the Viaplay Cup with a win over Stirling Albion.
“I knew how difficult the game was going to be. We let the players know that all week. We got a little bit caught up in the emotion of it in the last few minutes after they scored, because this club has been on the wrong end of a few cup upsets in the last few years. But my message all week has been clear, the only job tonight was to get through the round and into the last eight.
“Everybody outside this football club and our supporters wanted to see an upset, because that’s the magic of the cup. We had to make sure that didn’t happen and to be honest, we’ve hit the bar twice and if we’d taken some other very good chances, we could have had a good few goals.
“Credit to Stirling Albion, they were outstanding. The pitch was hard to play on, we couldn’t move the ball very quickly. But we won, with a lot of young boys in that side, in difficult circumstances that really test you. We won this competition when I played here, and we had to beat Alloa on penalties on the way. That’s the nature of cup football.
“Could we have played better football? Yes. But this is our third game of the season, we’re trying to build a whole new squad, we’ll get better as things go on. It takes time. But we are through in the cup, we played really well against Celtic and a point at Livingston is always a decent result. We’re getting boys back on the pitch, we’re getting sharper, we’re going in the right direction.”
