As Aberdeen booked their place in the last four of the Viaplay Cup with victory at Ross County, Barry Robson was very satisfied with the way his team went about their task.
“We made a good start and then after the sending off, we changed the shape to use the space and try and get down the sides. I was actually quite comfortable, even though it got a bit emotional in the last ten minutes, but if you look at it, Kelle Roos hasn’t had a save to make.
“The penalty they got from the ball over the top obviously gave them some momentum in those last few minutes but I always felt we deserved to win. We shouldn’t have had to go through that last ten minutes the way we did because we were in total control, but we put ourselves under a bit of pressure.”
With back to back wins over Ross County, following on from the encouraging display in Frankfurt, Robson made it clear that there’s plenty still to come from his side.
“Over the last week, I think we’ve performed well, but we know we’re nowhere near where we want to be just yet in terms of consistency and overall form. But we are where we want to be in this competition, we’re at Hampden for the semi-final, and we’ll start to think about that one at the end of next month when it comes around.
“I’d like to get on the training pitch to be honest. We’ve not been able to do that because of the number of games, so we’ve not done much coaching as such. It’s been a lot of video work, walk throughs on the grass, but they’re bright players, they take it on board and we’re starting to motor on.”
There was also a word for the night’s two goal scorers as the Dons made it through to the semi-final.
“Performances like tonight show you why Graeme is here and is the captain, he’s a real leader and he came up with a great goal that we worked on ahead of the game. I was pleased for Ester as well. You can see how dangerous he is, he plays on the shoulder, he’s quick and as the season goes on, he’ll get plenty of game time.”
