AFC Community Trust takes to the park

Since July, AFC Community Trust has been working with a group of adults over the age of 65 to help them increase the amount of physical exercise they do, and look to help them make new friends and try new activities. On the 24th of July, around 20 adults plus AFC Community trust staff went to Union Terrace Gardens to begin the 10 week programme called AFC In The Park. Funded by Aberdeen City Council and the NHS, the group took part in group games such as Walking Football, Tennis, Swingball, Ultimate Frisbee, as well as Health Walks around the park and surrounding areas. Fruit and water are also offered to the group for a break between the activities.

Throughout the programme the group will visit Aberdeen Beach, Duthie Park, Westburn Park, Hazelhead Park, and Union Terrace Gardens taking part in traditional games, as well as having arts n crafts classes, yoga classes, and rock n roll jiving dancing classes as well. The group are keen to show people that just because you are a bit older, you can still have lots of fun, remain active, and make new friends. One of the group members is even going Sky Diving for her birthday! This shows that you can always look at ways of working with the elderly community, and by offering these types of activities it can not only benefit their physical wellbeing, but being surrounded by a group of friends and people of similar age is also good for their mental wellbeing as well.

AFC Community Trust offer a wide variety of activities for over 65s including Health Walks, Walking Football, Football Memories, Still Game, TechnoGym, as well as hoping to announce a 12 month programme for over 65s very soon.
