Coaches invited to discuss health improvement initiatives

Steven Sweeney and Dean McBain of AFC in the Community visited 2nd Year Sports Science students at Robert Gordon’s University last week and delivered a Guest Lecture as part of their Health Improvement module.

AFC in the Community deliver a wide range of Programmes targeting different client groups, many of which encourage participants to lead a healthy lifestyle and participate in physical activity. Steven & Dean provided information on 4 of the Programmes currently being delivered, namely Still Game, Football Fans In Training , Walking Football and TACC FC. Students were then set a ‘boys v girls’ challenge, where they had to discuss then present how they would adapt the Programme based on what they had learned.

Dan Shaw, Subject Leader for Sport & Exercise Science at Robert Gordon’s University said, “AFC in the Community offers valuable physical activity experiences to a range of population groups who might not normally participate. Steven talks with passion about the purpose and impact of the initiatives and he captivated our students by engaging them in debate around how such initiatives are developed and delivered. The example set by AFC in the Community demonstrated to them that they don’t need to have earth shattering ideas to make a big difference to people’s health and wellbeing; what they need is a well thought out plan for delivery, and passion for what they are doing.”

Steven Sweeney, Senior Community Coach at AFC said, “I would like to thank Bryan McCann & Dan Shaw of Robert Gordon’s University for allowing us to come in to deliver this Guest Lecture today. It was great to raise awareness of the positive work AFC are currently doing within the Community, and the students came back with some really great ideas as to how we could take the Programmes forward. I wish the students all the best for the remainder of their studies.”
