with every cleansheet we gain confidence as defenders

Stefan Gartenmann has been part of a defence that has had five cleansheets in the last six games. His partnership with Angus MacDonald has been particularly impressive, as was the Danes outstanding goal line clearance on Saturday against St Johnstone. After the game Stefan spoke with Rob Maclean.

“For me that is like scoring a goal.

“That is my job and that helped us get a cleansheet, so just happy to be there, in the right place at the right time.

“It is great we are now getting cleansheets, but is about time.

“At the beginning of the season we were struggling and we conceded too many goals. Recently we have been really strong at the back. But it is not just about the defenders. The way we defend as a team starts further up the pitch. It is also the way we are playing at the moment because we have the ball a bit more than we used to. It is harder to conceded goals when you have the ball.

“It is also the confidence that is slowly getting back into the team and with every cleansheet we gain confidence as defenders.

“At the moment we have the feeling it is hard for teams to score against us. That is a great thing to have as a team.

“We could have won more convincingly these past two weeks, and if we start putting away more of our chances we will be a very good team.

“At the moment, we are keeping the cleansheets and one goal is enough to get the wins. And that has been our problem this season. We have not ground out enough 1-0 wins and also when we were scoring, we were also conceding two or three at the other end. It is very hard to win games when you are doing that.

“So again, it highlights that cleansheets are massive for us.

“I am just happy we have turned things around.

“I probably could have had five or six goals in these last two games.

“I don’t know what has happened there. I will say though that the service is getting better – our corners, free kicks. With the confidence coming back into the team everything starts to fall for our players all of a sudden. Earlier in the season, it was not happening for us. We were missing those last little bits of detail. Suddenly now the ball is dropping for us and we are getting the chances.

“We just need to add those little percentages and start to score more goals.

“We knew post-split it would not be pretty each week. You are playing against teams who are fighting for their lives. We have been fighting for our lives as well.

“We will not start relaxing now. We can’t drop our level in these last three games. We need to win.”
