Shay Logan spoke to RedTV after signing his contract extension:

The Decision

“It was not a difficult decision.

“I was more than happy to sign the extension. I can now go away and enjoy my summer.

“The stage I am at now, I am happy to finish my career here.

“I am happy for people to call me a veteran within the team, but I still feel young.

“I feel fresh. I had a lay off this season with the injury so I am sort of sad to see the season finish after only three games back. But I can now have a good summer and come back stronger.

“It is the first serious injury I have had in the last eight years. But you get on with it and come back stronger.

“The team suffered a few injuries this season. Hopefully next season we will have a bit more luck on that front.”

The Club

“I think it is a great club to be at.

“It is also a great city.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed it since the day I got here. The first day of training was before the League Cup semi-final against St Johnstone, and ever since that day I have been so happy here. I fell in love with the city, especially after winning the League Cup and I have loved it ever since. It has treated me well.

“I think also I have performed well here.

“I have a great rapport with the fans and also I get on tremendously with the manager and Tony Docherty. For me it is a great environment to be in and a great club to be at.”

Experienced Defence

“That is now three out of the back five signed up on deals. Joe, Andy and myself are the old ones in the dressing room! I think it is good for the manager as well to have players like that in the squad – players who have the knowledge, have the experience and have played lots of games for Aberdeen.

“We can teach the younger lads who are coming up what is required. The manager expects and demands certain things from players and that is why you see players leaving.

“I am happy to be in a position where the managers feels I have done that during the time I have been here so I want to continue to do that.”

The Manager

“The manager will leave one day.

“I think he may well become the Scotland manager one day. But he has not finished the job at Aberdeen yet. I am more than happy that he is still with us.

“Whether I would have been at Aberdeen as long as I have, if he had not been here, I don’t know. His man management with me has been second to none and I can’t thank him enough. I have to keep working hard for him and hopefully I will continue to get picked.”

New Facilities

“The new training ground was coming two weeks after I got here!

“It has not been ideal coming into training and not knowing where you are going that day. It has not been the best, but you just have to get on with it. The new training ground in September is something to look forward to. It will be great to have somewhere to call home and get familiar with. Aberdeen is such a big club, it really is needed. Hopefully we will have the new stadium to look forward to as well.”

New teammates

“The players the manager brings in during the summer, it is not just about ability. You have to bring the right characters in. There are a lot of strong characters who have left like Graeme Shinnie and loanees who have gone back like Ball, Wilson and Lowe who fitted in very well.

“But you still have the likes of myself, Joe, Andy, Mikey – so new players coming into the dressing room will not be told will know what is expected of them. As long as I have been here we have not had any bad eggs in the dressing room. Anyone like that would quickly be moved on.”

The Season

“Our away record has been quality, but since I have been here we have always had a very good record.

“The table does not lie. Kilmarnock pipped us on goal difference. We can say we should have won here and we should have won this game but there have also been games when we maybe should not have won. That is football.

“When I was out I was watching the games against Hamilton, Livingston and St Mirren. No disrespect but we win those games if we are right. We were just not right on the day. And ultimately that has cost us. Credit to Hamilton, Livingston and St Mirren for getting the results.

“Celtic have had a very strong season and could win the Scottish Cup which would help us get into Europe. Rangers have spent big money and Kilmarnock have had a great season. Fourth is not great but there are still things to take from the campaign.

“Hopefully we have European football to show for our efforts this season.

Aims

“I want to win another trophy.

“I don’t want to finish my Aberdeen career with just a league cup winners medal. If it was not for Celtic, we might realistically have had four or five trophies by now. That is just the way it is. But you have to perform in the big games. It will make it all the more sweeter when we do win a trophy, because it will come.

“I am getting married later this month then it is a case of spending time with the family and then recouping, getting the energy back into the legs. I will be raring to go.”
