Andrew Considine Q&A

Andrew recently spoke to Red Matchday Magazine for the 10 Questions feature:

1 Favourite game?

I have always said it was beating Motherwell in the quarter-finals of the League Cup, leading up to us winning the cup that year.

The game meant a lot to me because I had just returned after breaking my leg.

After we went down to ten men early on, I came off the bench and we were really up against it that night, that was a good Motherwell team. But I manged to score and Jonny Hayes netted on the counter late on. It still stands out.

More recently, I have had a few games that are certainly up there. The hat-trick game at Dens was great and scoring the winner against Celtic on the last day of the season last year.

Both those games come pretty close, but the significance of that Motherwell game, after having been out of football for nine months, anything could have happened. It was a very emotional night for me.

2 Favourite goal?

I could say my European one at Rijeka, when we went on to beat them 3-0. That was a very memorable night.

But I would probably go for my goal against Celtic to secure second place.

The game had a lot of significance, so much riding on it. We went in at half-time thinking Hibs were still leading comfortably but found out they were not, so we knew that going out in the second half, we had to win and I was lucky enough to be on the end of Kenny’s pass. I just put my foot through it.

Normally people would tell you from the position I was in to go across the keeper, but I gave him the eyes and slotted it home! Or something like that!!

3 Favourite thing to do away from football?

Spending time with the family.

I have two young boys that take up a lot of time.

Harry is always asking to play football in the house, which has led to a few things being broken! I’m the one who gets the blame! Teddy is a bit younger, but it won’t be too long before he is kicking a ball about as well.

Being a father is such a great thing and changes your priorities in life.

4 Favourite TV programme and film?

Once the boys have gone to sleep, we watch Netflix. It is the only time I will watch telly. I am currently watching “Power” and also I like “Game of Thrones”, can’t wait for the new season to come out.

“Man on Fire” is a great film starring Denzel Washington. It stands out for some reason.

5 Favourite item of clothing?

I have a very comfy ASOS tracksuit, my wife got it for me for Christmas. When you have two young kids who can at times be a bit messy, it’s great to throw on.

Generally I am quite casual with my dress code. There are days when I think that I need to change it up a little bit. Some of the boys turn up in very good gear, something I would wear for a night out or if I was going for dinner!

6 Who do you room with?

I am by myself.

The last person I roomed with was Russell Anderson.

Rusty used to snore a good bit. I am guessing it was caused by the many broken noses he had down the years! I used to share with Chris Clark and he was a snorer as well. I remember we played Hibs in the Scottish Cup semi-final in 2012 when Craig and Archie were in charge, we lost 2-1.

The night before, we were staying in the Hilton and Clarky’s snoring was that bad, in the early hours of the morning I went down to reception and asked for a new room but they would not let me have one, the hotel must have been full, so I went into the game with zero sleep that night!

He was very apologetic when I told him at breakfast that he had kept me awake all night.

Let’s just say I have done my fair share of rooming over the years. Now I need my sleep!

7 Best player in training?

I have seen this written lot by the other players in this feature, but I would have to agree and say Graeme Shinnie, probably more for his consistency.

He also runs all day. Graeme is a very popular figure around the club and a great captain. His performances on the pitch speak for themselves. He is a huge player for the club and a real role model for the young players at Pittodrie.

In my opinion Dom Ball would also be up there as well now. He is another one who you would want in your five-a-side team. He always looks for the ball, has plenty of energy and can score goals.

8 Favourite other sport and sportsperson?

Golf and Tiger Woods.

It’s a sport that I enjoyed when I was younger.

My dad and his family all played, both sides of the family played a lot in fact. My dad’s dad was a scratch golfer at Muirfield, so it’s in the blood. My brother was a scratch golfer, my dad was single figures.

When I joined Aberdeen professionally, I had a low handicap. I think I would always have gone down the football route though. If I gave golf as much time I had football when I was younger, I might have been good enough, but football was always the one for me.

I wish I could play more but it is harder now with a family and the way football is, you need to try and get the feet up and get as much rest as possible. Recovery is so important. I only really play now during the close season or the international breaks.

Golf has had a half a dozen real icons since the last war. You have Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Tiger Woods, potentially Rory McIlroy, but he has probably not done enough yet. Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth have had their moments, but Tiger is golf and what he has done in the game is outstanding.

Don’t get me wrong, Arnold did a lot for the game in the ‘60s, then Jack in the ‘70s and early ‘80s but Tiger has taken the game to a new level. It is also incredible that he has been able to get over his back injury and compete again at the top level and still win tournaments. He is without doubt one of the greatest ever athletes.

9 Person you would like to meet?

When I was little, I was always a massive fan of David Beckham.

He was the player I idolised, so I would still like to meet him! I remember coming along to watch him play for Manchester United against Aberdeen in Teddy Scott’s testimonial game. I took along a disposable kodak camera that night so I could take some pictures of him! He was my childhood hero.

10 Most influential person on your career?

I have spoken about the role my dad has played in my career in this publication before. He has done a lot and gave me the love of football. He would take me to all my games. As boys, he would have me and my brother out playing in the back garden when we were very little. We watched him play later in his career as well. Although he was only at Pittodrie for two and a bit years, he was very successful – he won a league title medal. Seeing how successful he was, even in just those two years, it really spurs me on. You want to experience the great moments he did.

I wouldn’t be sitting here today without dad’s help. He is the first person I speak to after a game and he will tell me exactly what he thinks, he will not shy away from anything, and I value his opinion massively. He still has a season ticket and sits in the Main Stand. He is at every home game he can make and he has always been there for me. He is there to pass on advice and give me an honest opinion!

I must also mention the influence my mum has had and my family in general. Family is everything. Both my brothers and sister have played their part as well. My wife Madeleine has also had a really big influence on me. Having that support has helped me become a better player. She has been a calming influence if you like. As footballers, our partners have to do an awful lot to help us be ready and prepared for a Saturday.

All told, I’m very lucky, my family life is fantastic, the foundation of everything.
