Aberdeen have this evening completed the signing of free agent Greg Halford. The experienced defender has just completed his medical and paperwork and will go straight into the squad for the Ladbrokes Premiership match against Hamilton Academical tomorrow evening – subject to international clearance.

He has signed a deal until the end of the season.

The 34-year-old Englishman, who has played for a number of clubs in the top-flight down south, can play at right back and central defence and will increase Derek McInnes’ options after the injuries to Shay Logan and Tommie Hoban.

Greg came through the youth system at Colchester United before joining Reading. Between 2007 and 2011 he played for Sunderland followed by a spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the EPL.

After that the former England U20 International had spells with Portsmouth, Nottingham Forest, Rotherham United and last season helped Cardiff City gain promotion from the Championship. At various points in his career he has enjoyed loan spells at Charlton Athletic, Sheffield United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Birmingham City.

Manager Derek McInnes told us about his latest addition to the squad.

“I am delighted to bring someone of Greg’s experience and ability to the club. He’s a hugely versatile player and that made him very attractive to us in terms of what we are looking for between now and the end of the season.

“At this stage of the campaign it is difficult to bring any player in so I’m really pleased to we’ve managed to secure someone of his stature.

“Speaking to Greg he is naturally excited about the prospect of coming to Aberdeen and we look forward to working with him”

Greg has been allocated squad number 14.

Everyone at Pittodrie wishes the player all the very best during his stay in the North-east.
