"Aberdeen has a big place in the family’s heart"

Refresh

Having joined the Dons on loan to the end of the season today, Callum Hendry can’t wait to get started at his new club.

“I’m delighted to get the chance to come up here. The manager says that I’ve got a chance to get games. He’s watched me play before and he was very positive, he made it clear how much he wanted me to come up here and he said he feels I can make a big difference. He said he sees the fight in me that my dad had!

“Game time is all I’m looking for now because I know that once I bang the first goal in, they’ll start to flood in, like they did last season. I’m coming here with a point to prove, to myself as much as anyone. I want to hit the ground running and deliver what it is the manager says he’s looking for from me.

“As soon as I heard Aberdeen were interested, it’s the only place I wanted to come. My dad’s family is from up here, Aberdeen has a big place in the family’s heart, and I also know how big the club is. It’s a bit of cliché I know, but it really is a massive club. Coming in to do the medical, you see the facilities at Cormack Park, they’re amazing.”

Deadline day is always pretty hectic and for Callum, Monday was a busy day.

“I trained as usual this morning and then I got calls from the manager here and at St Johnstone when I got home. From there, I jumped in the car and made my way up north and I’m really excited to be here.

“At the game with Aberdeen last Wednesday, I spoke to Matty Kennedy and I told him that I was looking to go out on loan and he said then that there was some interest in me coming here. But there was nothing firmer than that until the last couple of days. I’m just really pleased it worked out.”

Callum is, of course, the son of the former Scotland international and Blackburn skipper Colin Hendry, and he still plays a big role in Callum’s life.

“My dad has always been the biggest influence on my career. He’s helped me through all the good times and the bad times I’ve had. He looks after me now, so it’s good to have him as my agent as well, to have him in my corner.

Callum is keen to get his Aberdeen career underway as quickly as possible, and at least there’ll be one familiar face to help him settle into the group.

“I know Matty well, we’re good pals from our time together at Saints. I’ve played against most of the other boys here, we’ve kicked one another a few times! Speaking to the staff today, it seems like there’s a great group here and I’m really looking forward to getting started and working with everyone.”
