Aberdeen Women return to the Balmoral Stadium this Sunday as they welcome Spartans to the North east. The Dons go into the game off the back of a hard fought 3-1 victory on the road against Glasgow Women last Sunday. The sides have met twice this season, with Spartans winning the first match and the second game ending in a 1-1 draw.

With the game kicking-off at 1pm, we are encouraging as many as possible to come along to the game. Ticket news can be found here.

Academy Director Gav Levey gives his thoughts:

“It’s nice to be back playing at home again and hopefully we can contest an exciting match like when our teams met back in December. It’s also a chance to attract some new supporter’s along to our match, with it being a rare 1pm kick off, which enables our Scotland U19s players to travel to Albania with the National team later this evening.

“We do feel like we have a bit of a clean slate going into the post-split fixtures.

“In our last home game against Motherwell before the split, we played really well in the first-half but let ourselves down in the second-half. After that it was a case of having to treat the final 10 games as a mini season.

“You would rather finish the final 10 games of the season showing that you have made real progress over the course of the year. That is what is really important as we move onto the end of the season and there will be a transition to what will hopefully be a new management team coming into play then. Both the players and staff are determined to finish this season on a real high and show what this team is still capable of achieving. Not just collectively, but also individually where we expect to build on some very positive performances.

“There are still 27 points available to every team in this post-split. Earlier in the season, you have always known if the other teams around you are playing one of the top teams, such as Glasgow City, Celtic or Rangers, it is always difficult to get something out of those games. In this split I believe that teams will likely take points off one another, so would expect it to be quite exciting.

“We kicked off the post-split fixtures last week with a good win against Glasgow Women. We played well enough to create a number of chances throughout the game and should’ve been a bit more clinical, but three points and three goals is a good return.

“For the first time in a long while we had a bigger squad to choose from. We’ve challenged the girls that between now and the end of the season we want them to show why we should pick them and we’ve now got good competition for places in certain areas. We’ve also been trying to get more games in midfield out of Nadine for a while now. She started with us playing further back as she had been out the game for a while and needed to get up to speed. I think she really showed her midfield qualities again last week, whilst wearing the captain’s armband and really showed why she merited that in her performance. Millie also caused their defence real problems in the first half and I think her energy really set the tone for our victory.

“We now look forward to our game against Spartans as we welcome Debbi McCulloch and her side. Debbi is an experienced women’s football manager who I admire for all that she has achieved at Spartan’s FC in the Women’s game, community programme and business model. Spartans were pushing for top six right till the final game before the split, so we know we will be in for yet another tough challenge.

“There will be no shortage of confidence in our players after the victory last week and as much as it was important to win, we really need to take points from the teams above us if we want to achieve our targets for the remainder of the season.

“We are all very grateful for your continuous support for Aberdeen FC Women and please get behind our team.”
