Nicky Devlin | Clyde Reaction

Refresh

A goal, an assist and a place in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup. Not a bad night’s work for Nicky Devlin down at New Douglas Park, was it? Speaking afterwards, he made it clear that having the right approach to the game was crucial.

“Coming into the game, people look at Clyde at the bottom of League Two and just assume it’s going to be a walkover. Football isn’t like that. The TV people picked this game out because they’re hoping for a shock result. We knew there was pressure on us to come here and win, so you have to come and do a professional job, which we did.

“We knew they would get men behind the ball and that makes any side difficult to break down at any level. We kept plugging away and in the end, we managed to get the job done. The first half an hour, we had a lot of possession without really creating too much, but when you’ve got a striker like Bojan, you know when you do create something, there’s a good chance it’ll be a goal.

“He’s a top player and for me, he’s the best striker in the country. You’ve seen in the European games, he didn’t look out of place, no matter who we were playing against, he’s the main striker for his national team, so it all underlines what a good player he is. He works hard, his stats for running and sprinting are as high as anybody in the team, he mucks in as much as anybody, and that’s brilliant for us.”

Attention now turns back to the league with the Dons playing catch up, both in terms of points and games played. Devlin feels Aberdeen can attack those games with confidence.

“Apart from the St Mirren game just before the break, we’ve been on a decent run, and now we have to kick on. We had three days in a row on the training pitch during the break, which is probably the first time since pre-season, and that was helpful, but we play every midweek again for a while to come now and we’re looking forward to that and to getting some good results.

“We want group stages in Europe again, we know we’ve given ourselves plenty to do but we are ready for the challenge. We have to make the games in hand count – they’re no use unless you win them.”
