Neil Warnock | St Mirren Preview

Refresh

Manager Neil Warnock carried out his pre-match media duties on Friday morning as he previewed our trip to St Mirren. RedTV subscribers can watch in full now.

“We didn’t take our chances on Wednesday evening and goals do change games. They give you confidence. I think the biggest word for me at the minute is confidence. I think the lads are just lacking a bit of confidence because of our results. We had chances and they do inspire you. You get a goal and it gives everybody a lift. I always thought if we could equalise in the second half that we’d go on and win it. It was disappointing. We’ve had a few kicks in the teeth and we’ve got to get on with it now. We’re going to try and be positive and get on with it.

“We’ve got to be positive. There is no good in feeling sorry for ourselves. We know what’s going on. We talk about the silly mistakes, but I think we’ve got to be positive and that’s got to come from me. The lads have got to put the fear side away. We shouldn’t concede the goals (that we have), everybody knows that but we have done and we’ve got to try and eliminate the little silly mistakes and give ourselves a chance. Killie was 30 seconds to go and the other night was two minutes to go. It’s not happened while I’ve been here in the league to score first. We’ve got to stay on the front foot and be positive. The fans have been good, I’ve got no problem with with fans. I think they’ve been really good. They want to see the team doing everything and doing well and that’s what I want to see.

“You go to bed at night when you’re a manager, you’re not winning games and you’re tossing and turning. The next morning you’ve got to be ready for it, you’ve got to be bright, you’ve got to look at where we can be better, what we can do, how we can win games and that’s what happened. I’ve had a busy last 48 hours in my own mind and that’s what you get paid for.

“I felt a little bit sorry for Shayden (Morris). I felt it was the right thing to do for the him, to take him out the the firing line. The other lads have all responded. It’s a matter of trying to get a system. We know the teams probably have got more physicality than us but that doesn’t mean that we can’t put a fight up against them and give them problems. That’s what we’ve got to do, try and give St Mirren problems tomorrow. You’ve got to take your hat off to St. Mirren and Kilmarnock, they’ve done remarkably well this year and Hearts as well, in a tough league. I suppose we’re envious of their position but we’ve got to make sure we try and get points on board now and not be afraid to go to places like St Mirren. We’ve got to go and give it a go.

“If you win your own battles and the results don’t come, you can’t ask for any more and fans will always support you like that. In fairness, I don’t think anybody’s not tried. I think we’ve had a lot of demoralising goals against us that have really knocked our confidence at times. Just when we’re on top, they seem to have knocked us back a little. I think we’ve got to be positive and that’s what I’m going to try and instil tomorrow. Let’s have a go when we can. I know we’ll be under pressure from the way St Mirren are but I think we’ve just got to go there and give them a good game.

“We’ve got to persevere and we have got some decent lads. I think we’ve just got to be confident. It’s amazing how confidence can change at the slightest point and we’ve got to change that mentality. The lack of confidence, we’ve got to get some confidence and that comes with results.

“I think you know results breed confidence. Scoring goals breeds confidence for strikers and clean sheets breed confidence for defenders. I’ve got to be positive and we’ve got to give our fans something to cheer about. We know we’re going to be under the cosh away from home. We have to cope with that and try and be positive in what we do. I think that’s what I thought over the last 48 hours. We need a little bit of luck. I don’t think we’ve had any luck if I’m honest. I think you need a bit of luck in football. I look at the goals that we have conceded and on another day, we could have scored quite a few more goals. You need a little bit of luck as well and you never know when that’s going to come, I hope it’s tomorrow.”
