Neil Warnock First Press Conference as Manager
After being appointed as our manager until the end of the season, Neil Warnock sat down with the media to discuss his appointment and to preview Tuesday’s game with Rangers at Ibrox. RedTV subscribers can watch in full now through the video above.
“It’s been a long time, I’ve always wanted to manage in Scotland. I have got a place in Dunoon, I’ve always had a place down there. I have always enjoyed going to watch a game at Greenock Morton.
“When I spoke to Dave Cormack and Alan Burrows, it felt like the right thing to do. It gives them a bit of time to look for the right manager to take the club forward. As I said lets have a bit of fun between now and the end of the season. I applied for the job once and never got a reply and I felt let down at the time. I used that to motivate myself, ‘I will show them what they are missing’ and I got promotion the following year.
“Aberdeen is a big club and the kind of fans that they have got, I relate to that type of fan. If you look at QPR and Crystal Palace the fans are hostile and I don’t mean that in a nasty way. Its lovely to get fans behind the team and supporting the team. It’s a one club city and a really good challenge. I would like to have a go in this league and at a club like Aberdeen. I can’t change the squad because the window is closed. We are maybe a little bit light in certain areas but I am not going to worry about that. I am just going to do what I can do with what we have got and try to enjoy it. I was going to start next week but the lure of taking over before a game like tomorrow night is to good really. I am hoping we can get a win tomorrow night.
“It is a club that is ambitious. I can’t guarantee anything but I want to pit my wits against the teams that we come up against between now and the end of the season. There is a lot to play for league wise and cup wise. I would like to win a cup, I haven’t won one before. It is a good challenge for me. I think Aberdeen is an ideal place for me.
“I think its nice to be an underdog and come up against the likes of Celtic and Rangers. Obviously I will only have one session today. If we get battered tomorrow its Peter fault, if we do well I am very influential for the result!“I get called a dinosaur and all sorts of names, some of them I can’t repeat! In my career as a football manager from start to finish, nothing has changed that to be successful in management, 90-95% of it is man management. I don’t think anything has changed from when I first started to now. I like to judge things by own eyes and have a look. I am quite excited even at my age. I like to make people smile. I like going into a club and meeting all of the staff.
“We can have a couple of months now. The only pressure on me is that I want to win. I have got to enjoy it and make the fans enjoy it. Looking at the fans comments, 50% want me and 50% don’t want me so I have to convince the other 50% to enjoy themselves!
“There will be players who haven’t got games who will come into the fore. I got a good feeling about here. In the past couple of weeks I could have got two or three times my salary here than down in England. You don’t come back at my age unless there is something that ticks the boxes. I really enjoy Scotland.
“I always go with my gut. I didn’t ring anyone before I came up here. I didn’t want to come here unless Dave Cormack really wanted me. When I get on with an owner I usually do well. I am really looking forward to it and I am excited.
“If the players give me everything here, I will man their corner. I will be disappointed if people pull out of tackles or headers, if people don’t stick with their man or the centre half tries and dribbles it if they shouldn’t do. I want the pride back in. I think Aberdeen is one of the clubs, you kiss the badge and you mean it. If you watch the Premier League they kiss the badge and they are off the next week!
“I have come to try and take a bit of pressure off of Dave and Alan. I would like to let those two enjoy a spell while they are looking for a very important position. If they want to ask me questions then great.
“The potential here is anything. I know money is vital but I don’t think any of my promotions or success have come down to money. Its amazing what you can do with a group of lads if they believe and they commit themselves to what you want to do. I believe that is one of my strengths, getting the best out of the players who are here. We only have one session today but I want to put one or two ideas into their minds.”
