James McGarry arrives in Aberdeen

Refresh

“I’m feeling fit and ready to go”

The Dons ninth signing of the season arrived in Aberdeen on Sunday night with plenty of airmiles in the bag but while we mere mortals might find ourselves jetlagged on a trip to sunny Spain, he looked enviably refreshed when he reported for duty at Cormack Park on Monday morning.

“It was a 30 hour flight over, I got in on Sunday night, but I’m actually feeling pretty fresh and ready to go. I had a training session on Monday morning with the lads that that needed a top up and it felt good actually, it felt good to get the legs moving! The jetlag will be interesting today, I’m going to try and keep myself up to about eight or nine o’clock if I can!”

McGarry’s move to Aberdeen comes off the back of a title win with Central Coast Mariners in Australia, but the Kiwi is clearly not one to rest on his laurels.

“I got to a point in the A-League where I was very comfortable and playing some of the best football I’ve played. For me, it’s always about reaching the top level. I haven’t put so much time and effort and time away from family into football to settle for playing at a certain level, I always want to reach the top and Aberdeen and the Scottish Premier League is the next step for me.

“Aberdeen seemed like a perfect fit. Talking to the gaffer about what he sees in me, what he wants out of me and how I fit into his game plan, it fits me to a tee. I’m an attacking player. I love dominating wide areas, crossing balls, I love getting assists and scoring goals. I got four goals last season from left-back and that was playing in not as attacking a team as here. Looking at sort of all those things, it was an easy decision for me to come here.”

A man in a hurry, Jimmy as he is now known around the training ground, is already looking towards a possible Dons debut on Friday night at Stirling Albion.

“I’m feeling fit and ready to go. I’ve trained today, I’ll do some stuff tomorrow and it’s a case of just going from there. We’ll see what the gaffer wants but I’m hoping in the back of my mind that I can be involved.”
