Stephen Robinson: We want to finish the season strongly

Aberdeen boss Stephen Robinson was left to rue missed chances as the Dons were twice pegged back in the 2-2 draw at Livingston.

“I thought the first half we were very good, it seems. We should have been out of sight, the game should have been done. Marvin made three changes at half-time, so you can tell he probably thought the same. We've had three one-on-ones with the goalkeeper that we should score. But at 1-0, you know Livingston are always going to come back.

“The disappointing bit for me is the decisions leading to both goals can be better. You have to make good decisions to win games, and we didn't do that on those occasions. We got punished for it. We showed good character to go ahead again at 2-1, two more great chances in the second half to finish it off again, but we didn’t take them.

“I thought some of our play was very good around the box. If we get the second goal, I feel the game's out of reach for Livingston to an extent. But when you don’t get it, that's what happens. So the positives are that some of our play was very good, our movement and our creativity was good. But there's lots of things still to improve on. If we'd won the game, I'd still be saying the same, but there's been steps forward and something to keep building on.

“Collectively, there's improvement, there's positives. We're three unbeaten, and a point away at home in this environment where they’ve done well against the top teams of late, on a hard pitch to play on, is a decent point. We're disappointed we haven't come out with three points.”

Mitchel Frame grabbed his first Aberdeen goal, and his manager made it clear that he is expecting more from the young left-back in the future.

“Mitchel scored a great goal coming in on his right foot. We're preaching to him about being positive, delivering balls into the box. He's got good, good attributes. He'll improve with game time as he gets a little bit more maturity in his game.

“We've got to keep working on his defensive side. A lot of the younger players are fairly forward-thinking, which is good, but we've also got to be able to do the defensive bit and see games out. We’ve done lots of 1v1 work with him, defending against wide players. He's a winger at heart, he's a winger in his mind, so we don't want to take that away from him.

“But we have to keep working on him to get more defensive attributes into the game without taking the good stuff away going forward. Mitchel's one of those with a good future ahead, but lots of work to do, as the whole squad does.

“Toyosi needs a goal, for instance. All strikers live off goals. But he causes so many problems for teams. His movement's excellent. He's got electric pace. He does a lot of the running work, Kevin scores a lot of goals. As a partnership, they've done well.

“Toyosi had two great chances tonight that he knows he should score from. We've seen him do that previously. But confidence is everything in strikers. He has to keep getting in those positions, and while he keeps doing that, then we keep backing him. His luck will turn.”

With the Dons edging ever closer to safety, Robinson has challenged his players to extend their unbeaten run to season’s end, while picking up some more wins.

“First and foremost, I want to win every game towards the end of the season. Everyone's playing for their future. Everyone's playing to be part of this next season. There's no guarantees for anybody.

“We've had a season of underachieving. We want to finish strongly. We want to reward the fans for their loyalty. I want people to step up and show me they want to be here and they're good enough to be here. A lot of people have done that. I hope there will be opportunities for others to do the same, but I won't sacrifice the chance of winning football matches for that.”
