Stephen Robinson reacts to victory over Hibernian

Stephen Reaction

Stephen Robinson was understandably elated having got his first Aberdeen win under his belt, the Dons extending the gap to the sides in the bottom two.

“I thought we were excellent throughout, even with 11 v 11. I thought some of our play was really good. We didn't look like we were in a relegation battle. The situation we're in comes with a lot of pressure, comes with a lot of criticism, some of it deserved. But I thought the boys stood up today. There were some really, really good performances.

“It doesn't make us safe by any stretch of the imagination, but certainly that performance is what I'm seeing in training. Now we've been able to put that onto the pitch. We said on Friday it was the best atmosphere we've seen here. Some of the staff have been here a long time and said it was the best atmosphere they've seen in maybe three or four months. A little bit of togetherness, people smiling, people actually enjoying being together at the training ground. Sometimes that relates onto the pitch.

“We know there's lots of things that haven't been good enough this season. But for now, this performance, I'm very proud of how they played today under pressure.

“The clean sheet was massive and we've worked tirelessly on that. We've worked on it all week about set plays and defending from set plays. But you stop goals as a team. The strikers have to stop the ball higher up the pitch, protect the midfielders. The midfielders protect the back five, and it becomes a team.

“When I first came in, it goes over somebody's head, they think, ‘It's not my responsibility.’ It is. And we've got that into the boys now that everybody's fighting to keep a clean sheet. They've done that very well today. We're not going to get carried away. There's lots and lots of work to do. But there's certainly a very good performance there and a big, big improvement.

“Toyosi is horrible to play against. He never gives up. He runs his socks off. He's got electric pace. Teams don't like playing against him, so we have to use that pace at times. He had a really good game today. I just wish he'd have rounded that off with a goal.

I thought we were really patient today. We passed the ball well and moved him until we got the opportunities to put Toyosi in and put Kevin in and Topi when he'd come on.

“Afeez, Stuart and Lyall ran the game. Stuart Armstrong's a joy to watch at times. He gives us that composure. It doesn't faze him at all. Afeez as well, now he's getting fitter and stronger, knowing what we want from him. I thought Lyall really contributed to that as well.

“To a man, there wasn't a bad performance. The back three defended really well. We said, don't concede set plays, don't concede a goal, let's get a clean sheet. Then you don't lose the game. They've done that, even in the last couple of minutes when they were tired. They showed that they have got that fight.

“You have to bottle that feeling when you’ve won, and remember what that feels like. Remember how tired you feel after it, because that's what it takes to win football matches. You have to run yourself into the ground. The quality shows when you do that.

“I thought we played some really, really good stuff today, some really good one-touch movement between the midfield and forward players. We have to build on that. We can't sit on our laurels and think that's enough. That's a performance I expect from an Aberdeen football team, but we have to try and build on that.

“The crowd responded and the fans were superb. They got right behind the players. It helps so much when they do that. When people are behind you like the crowd were today, you can see the confidence rising. You can see the talent coming through.

“But we won't ever relax. We won't allow the players to do that. They don't want to. They want to build on this. They're as disappointed as anyone with the season and how it's gone. I think it's important that we try and build on that performance and that confidence, get the crowd behind the players again, and then we finish the season strongly.”
