Aberdeen Women travelled south to face Glasgow City in their final pre-season match on Sunday afternoon.

Scott Booth named an unchanged side from last weekend’s friendly versus Dundee United.

Report

The hosts broke the deadlock on five minutes when Natalia Wrobel was played through on goal and despite Anna Prawer’s best efforts, the forward slotted home for 1-0.

The Dons responded well to the early setback, looking more assured in possession and creating a few opportunities of their own. The closest came through Eva Thomson who fired goalward from range though her effort was comfortably saved by City goalkeeper Lee Gibson.

Aberdeen nearly equalised on 23 minutes when Darcie Miller was released in behind the defence, firing just over the top of Gibson’s crossbar under pressure from Kimberly Smit.

Moments later following a great run from Kerry Beattie to win the corner,  Aimee Black rose highest to head across goal but the hosts managed to scramble clear.

Seconds later and the Dons were almost architects of their own downfall as a mistake in the defence left Abi Harrison one on one, though her attempted lob was high and wide of target.

Abi Harrison again came close to doubling the hosts lead in the 40th minute when goal scorer Wrobel fizzed a ball across goal but the City number nine failed to direct her effort on target.

That proved to be the last action of note in the first half, a half in which Scott Booth’s Dons more than held their own against Leanne Ross’ title hopefuls.

The Dons returned for the second half unchanged from the first following a measured display having gone behind early on. Scott Booth turned to his bench for the first time on 53 minutes following a bright start to the second half, with Hannah Stewart and Francesca Oglivie coming onto replace Toni Leigh Finnegan and Holly Daniel.

Despite all the signs of encouragement for the Dons, City doubled their lead on 64 minutes, when a loose back pass from the Aberdeen midfield played in substitute Nicole Kozlova who kept her composure to slot home for two nil, against the run of play.

The Dons continued to threaten, most notably when Francesca Oglivie released the introduced Trialist on the right wing who fizzed a ball into the area but unfortunately for the away side City once again managed to clear the danger.

The full-time whistle sounded with the Dons succumbing to a two-goal defeat in their final pre-season friendly in Glasgow, though Scott Booth and his players can take plenty encouragement from their performance ahead of their first league fixture in two weeks’ time against defending champions Hibernian.
