Aberdeen Women were offered the chance to build on last week’s cup victory at home to Kilmarnock as they took on newly promoted Hamilton Accies in the SWPL 1.

Scott Booth made three changes from last week’s cup victory. Katie Cox returned between the sticks, whilst Aimee Black’s position change was solidified as she started up front alongside Beattie, who also returned to the starting XI. Prawer, Daniel, and Galloway all dropped to the bench.

It was back-to-back Balmoral wins as the Dons turned on the style, putting five past Hamilton in a thrilling, all-action display. Kerry Beattie opened the scoring before Eva Thomson, Aimee Black’s double, and Mya Christie rounded off a convincing 5–0 victory that showcased the Don’s attacking prowess.

Report:

The visitors kicked things off at a lively Balmoral; however, things started slowly with both sides feeling each other out.

A half chance came the way of the home side when Francesca Ogilvie’s left-footed cross flashed Accie’s box, Stewart and Black both stretched for the poke in but couldn’t match the pace of the pass.

Soon after, Aberdeen began to find their rhythm. When Aimee Black’s cross was punched away by Erin Halliday, it fell kindly to Kerry Beattie. The Northern Ireland international met it on the volley, forcing Halliday into a sharp recovery save to tip over her own bar.

Moments later, Beattie was at it again. Slipped through the left half-space by Abigail Tobin, she drove into her favourite area, feinted onto her right foot and unselfishly squared the ball to Ogilvie. The wingback struck cleanly, only for Shona Cowan to throw herself bravely in the way.

Ogilvie threatened once more on the 20-minute mark, cutting inside Cowan before curling narrowly wide of the top corner. Hamilton, meanwhile, stuck to their game plan of inviting pressure and looking to spring forward through the physicality of Giard and the runs of Sophie Townsley. But the Dons’ back three of Broadrick, Finnie, and Finnegan were alert, cutting out danger before it could materialise.

Aberdeen’s breakthrough finally came in the 26th minute, and it was thoroughly deserved. Ogilvie’s cross forced Halliday into another awkward save, tipping the ball onto her crossbar. Beattie reacted quickest, following in to smash home the rebound and make it two goals in as many games.

The Dons almost found their second goal via a set-piece. Tobin’s corner was met by the leap of Finnegan, whose header looked goal-bound, but Halliday’s quick reactions kept it out. Ogilvie could only head over for the follow-up.

Broadrick was next to try her luck on goal. Another accurate Abigail Tobin corner was met by the centre-back’s leap, with only the crossbar denying her header in the 40th minute.

A dominant first-half display from the Dons only had them going into the break one goal to the good, though their command of the contest deserved a greater cushion.

Half Time Aberdeen 1– 0 Hamilton

An early chance fell the way of Hamilton as Olivia McStay intercepted a loose Finnegan pass before driving down the by line and whipping in a challenging cross which went under Cox, causing some confusion in the box.

A huge opportunity for Hamilton came the way of Townsley as she hunted down Georgia Gray’s free-kick, which Finnegan failed to deal with. Townsley’s connection rolled past Cox, who came rushing out but rolled agonisingly wide.

Accies were made to rue that missed chance as a minute later, the tenacious as ever Eva Thomson won possession just past the edge of the centre circle, driving all the way into the box to smash a near post shot high and in off Halliday to grant Aberdeen the two-goal lead their efforts deserved.

Aimee Black tripled the Dons’ lead on the hour mark, racing into the box to connect off a deflected Ogilvie cross to fire home unchallenged. Black’s brace meant that she has netted three in her last two – a happy return for her new position.

Just seven minutes later, it was Mya Christie’s turn to get in on the act. Ilijoski and Tobin would link up down the left wing, with the latter providing the teasing cross for Halliday to spill. Just coming on, Christie made an instant impact, sensing the danger to follow in and sweep home with her right foot through both McIntosh and Cowan’s attempts to block in the 67th minute.

The onslaught continued as a perfectly weighted ball in behind from Christie added insult to injury for the visitors in the 70th minute. Black showed real pace to get past her marker and smash into the roof of the net, leaving no chance for Halliday to complete her brace before leaving the field to a resounding reception from the home support.

The Dons were strutting their stuff out there, not resting despite the scoreline. Christie nearly got her second shooting from range unto the woodwork before Clarke’s solo effort was saved.

Melissa Reid nearly denied Cox of her clean sheet in the last minute as her cross-come shot had Cowie diving to make contact, but it wasn’t to be for the South Lanarkshire side as the Dons collected all three points.
