Derek McInnes | St Mirren Reaction

“We tried to be positive with an attacking line-up, two attacking full-backs, two wide players and a front two, trying to carry more of a threat, but with the conditions as they were, it’s hard to judge how that went today. “I have to say the conditions were dreadful for football today and in those situations, concentration levels for defenders are so important. I thought both sets of back fours played really well, didn’t give up any mistakes.

It was important for us to try and apply a bit more pressure and ask the questions but both sets of players adapted well defensively to make sure chances were at a minimum. It’s the kind of day when it’s much easier to keep the ball out of the net than put it in there and I think both sides would agree on that.

“We can’t get away from the fact we’ve had five games without scoring, so of course it’s a concern. We’ve brought players in to try to change that and the willingness of those lads can’t be questioned. We understand we have to work with them to get up to top speed for them, but it’s the stage of the season where we need them firing now. Getting them in so late in the window hasn’t helped that.

“Getting Kamberi on the pitch is very positive. He looked eager to please, it was difficult for any of the attacking players to get any rhythm today but I thought he settled well, and we were pleased to get 90 minutes from him. He only trained on Friday, so considering that, he can be pleased with his debut and there was enough there to show he will help us. He’s up and running and now we’ll expect more from him and the other boys, the more minutes they get.

“A lot of the speed has gone out of the team with the loss of Hedges and Wright in different ways, and we have to find different ways of carrying a threat. I felt we did a lot right, our young central midfielders, Ferguson and Campbell were excellent, but we need to do better in the final third – and that’s everybody, not just the forwards.

“One point doesn’t really get the job done for us, we need to be winning games now to try and get that momentum going through to the end of the season. We’ll go to Celtic on Wednesday and look to do that. The commitment from the boys is there, which is great, now we need to demonstrate the quality we have at Celtic Park too.”
