Jesper Karlsson’s loan spell at Aberdeen has come to an end after his parent club, Bologna, activated a recall option, with the player now set to move to another club on the continent.

The Swedish international winger was a regular under former manager Jimmy Thelin, scoring six goals in 26 appearances for the Dons.

Aberdeen FC Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel said: “We were notified on Wednesday evening of Bologna’s decision to recall Jesper.

“Jesper and I had a very good conversation. He was extremely thankful for his time in Aberdeen, and we wish him every success in the next chapter of his career.

“From our perspective, given that this clause existed within the loan agreement, we have been scenario-planning for some time in the event it was activated.

“We remain committed to developing the players we have invested in, while also continuing to explore opportunities to strengthen the squad in areas where we believe improvement is still required.”

Karlsson’s career has previously seen him represent Elfsborg, AZ Alkmaar, Bologna and Lecce, prior to his spell in the North-east of Scotland.

The 27-year-old was keen to thank everyone at the Club for his time in Red.

He said: “I have really enjoyed my time here and in Scotland.

“Results didn’t always go as we had hoped, but Aberdeen is a great Club with a fantastic fanbase, and I would like to thank everyone for how I was treated.

“I would also like to wish the staff, my teammates and the supporters all the very best for the future.”

Everyone at Aberdeen FC would like to thank Jesper for his contribution during his time at Pittodrie and wish him every success going forward.
