Dons Swoop for Swedish Sensation
Aberdeen have pulled off a major signing coup with the arrival on deadline day of Swedish international Jesper Karlsson.
The winger is currently playing in Serie A club Bologna but will move on loan to the North-east to be reunited with former manager Jimmy Thelin.
The 27-year-old becomes our twelfth new arrival from the summer transfer window and with the deal completing just before the window shut, Dons boss Jimmy Thelin was delighted to add Jesper to his squad.
“Jesper is a top professional and to have secured his services is great news for everyone associated with Aberdeen FC”, said Jimmy.
“He is an extremely talented footballer who has real quality, and we believe he will be a brilliant addition the squad.
“It is important for him to play regularly, and we can provide that opportunity for him to go and perform.
Commenting on his move to the Dons, Jesper said:
“I am really happy to have signed for Aberdeen.
“When I spoke with the manager and staff their desire for me to come here was clear, and that was hugely important to me.
“I believe I can come here and get game time, which I hope will help my efforts to get back into the national team.
“This is a historic club, will big ambition and I look forward to playing at Pittodrie in front of the Red Army.”
Karlsson began his professional career in his native Sweden with his hometown club, Falkenbergs FF before moving to Swedish topflight side IF Elfborg where he worked under Jimmy.
The winger joined Dutch Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar from Elfsborg for a fee of around €2.6m in August 2020 and subsequently scored 35 goals from 89 league appearances.
This impressive form earned lots of interest from Serie A with Lazio, Napoli and Fiorentina all having expressed an interest at various stages of the transfer window, but it was Bologna who won the fight for his signature in 2023 for a reported €11m.
He has also earned 14 caps for his country, scoring five times for the Swedish National Team.
