There was plenty to be positive about for Scott Booth after Aberdeen Women’s final pre-season friendly on Sunday afternoon, despite the 2-0 defeat away to a strong Glasgow City side.

“We made a couple of mistakes across the full game, one really early on – and we got punished for it. Then one in the second half, and we got punished for it. Other than that, we were really organized. We were brave in possession. We kept the ball well.

“We supported each other well. We communicated really well. It felt like a really well-connected performance today.

“We can play a couple of different formations now. Going back to our more natural formation today, the players took to it really quickly. We did a lot of work in midweek to change back to that shape. It felt comfortable against a really good side.

“We kept them from creating too many chances. Within our shape, we won the ball back well and kept the ball well.

“The only thing we could have asked more of today was, in those situations where we had been in good shape and won the ball back, we need to test the goalkeeper a little bit, we need to more positive about getting forward or getting in behind them. That’s probably the only aspect we could have improved on today.

“They reacted brilliantly to losing an early goal. Last season, we would lose another one quickly after that. We talked about it at half-time. We played too well today to be on the end of a big defeat.

“Other than a couple mistakes, that was a really organised, connected performance. The players are really happy.

“I really like Abi as a player. She’s so young. She can go far in the game. So can Holly Daniel. Holly is also a really young player; you wouldn’t know it.

“They’ve came into the side and handled it really well. They’ve taken on a lot of information. I was pleased with all the players today.

“Some of the players that played the majority of games last season: Maddie, Aimee, Jess… they did really well today. They looked comfortable.

“The midfield, with Emma in there again, did really well. Eva brought lots of energy for us in there. There was a feeling today of the players understanding each other. We looked like and felt like a real team today.”
