Defender Signs Contract Extension with the Dons
Mats Knoester has signed a contract extension that will see him remain a Don until at least 2029.
The Dutch centre-back, who arrived at Pittodrie in February 2025, has quickly established himself as a key figure in the Aberdeen defence, impressing with his commanding performances and strong leadership qualities.
The 26-year-old has played a crucial role in the team’s recent success and the new deal reflects the Club’s commitment to building a strong, stable squad for the future.
“Mats has been an outstanding addition to our squad, both on and off the pitch, since his arrival at the start of the year”, said Jimmy Thelin.
“Securing his services for the next four years is a significant step for us as we continue to build a competitive team capable of competing on all fronts next season.
“We’re pleased that Mats sees his long-term future here at Aberdeen.”
Commenting on his new deal, Mats said:
“The past few months have been very positive for me and since day one, my family and I have been made to feel very welcome. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here.
“Extending my contract feels like the right thing to do. The Club has fantastic infrastructure, passionate supporters, and a clear direction for the future.
“I’m looking forward to growing together and I am keen to play my part in the team’s future success as we work hard to achieve our goals.”
Knoester began his career in the Feyenoord youth academy and developed there for 14 years before moving to Heracles in 2019. After spending three years with the Eredivisie side, he moved to Hungary in 2022 signing for Ferencvaros.
Mats won the NBI league with Ferencvaros in May 2023 before joining Aarhus Gymnastikforening (AGF) in Denmark later that year on a one-year loan deal with a purchase option.
