Aberdeen FC Supports Foundation Apprenticeships in Business Skills
Aberdeen Football Club is proud to support the next generation of business professionals through the Foundation Apprenticeship in Business Skills, a collaborative initiative with Skills Development Scotland and Aberdeenshire Council.
This programme offers S5 and S6 pupils the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a real working environment while working towards a qualification at the same level as a Higher (SCQF Level 6).
Foundation Apprenticeships are designed to bridge the gap between school and the workplace. Pupils split their time between classroom learning and practical experience, completing a National Progression Award (NPA) in Business Skills.
Employers host pupils for half a day per week, offering them the chance to contribute to real business tasks such as social media and marketing, preparing presentations, attending meetings and general administrative support.
From September 2024 to March 2025, Aberdeen FC welcomed two pupils from Westhill Academy as part of the programme. Their placements were a resounding success, with both students passing their course and gaining valuable insights into the business side of football.
Ellis Glennie – Ticket Office Placement
Ellis spent his placement in the Ticket Office, where he worked on tasks using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and developed a ticket promotion project.
“I learned how to use the ticketing system and what it’s like to work in a business environment. The team made me feel welcome from day one.”
Ellis particularly enjoyed job shadowing and creating his project, and he now has a deeper understanding of how football clubs operate behind the scenes.
Kyle Cunningham – AFC Community Trust Placement
Kyle joined the Aberdeen FC Community Trust (AFCCT), where he focused on a project exploring Cash vs Cashless Fundraising. He also completed tasks in Microsoft Office and supported the team with practical duties.
“The placement helped me build confidence, improve my presentation skills, and understand how a charity operates. It was a great experience.”
Kyle appreciated the independence he was given and found the supportive environment ideal for learning and growth.
