The mentality has to be better

Aberdeen skipper Graeme Shinnie was very clear that Aberdeen’s second half display at Ibrox on Sunday simply wasn’t good enough.

“I didn’t think we were anything special in the first half, to be fair. I didn’t think we’d done enough with the ball, but defensively, we looked okay. We wasted the ball a lot in forward areas which was frustrating because there were gaps there. When we beat the press, there were big gaps to exploit, but we didn’t do it well enough.

“In the second half, we started really well and created some chances. We were really on the front foot and then lost a really, really poor goal, and from there, we lost all control. The shape of the team was all over the place.

“It was poor on our behalf after going behind. We didn’t keep our composure, didn’t keep the shape of the team, and they exploited it well, to be fair to them. We need to do better, we need to control our emotions, because we started the second half well and arguably should have gone ahead.

“We need to be more calm when a goal goes in against us, because there was loads of time to get back in the game. But we just lost our shape and weren’t playing as a team, and they exploited it.

“The mentality has to be better to stop that. That’s from everyone, the shape of the team, dragging people into position, being more determined and running more and tackling more. When there’s a bit of adversity, you need to stand up to it. We didn’t do that. It’s something we have to get better at, and quickly.”
