Scottish Cup Special | John Hewitt Interview

Gothenburg hero John Hewitt will forever have his name etched into the history of Aberdeen FC after scoring that winning goal against Real Madrid.

But the Aberdeen born forward, Alex Ferguson’s first ever signing for the club, had the knack of scoring some vitally important goals for the club, including the quickest Scottish Cup goal on record. His 9.6 second strike against Motherwell at Fir Park in 1982 set the Dons on a roller coaster ride that will never be forgotten.

From winning the competition as an 18-year-old with his friend Neale Cooper in ’82, to scoring two goals in the ’86 final, John was part of a special group of players who over a four-year period went 23 Scottish Cup matches undefeated. That team that won three consecutive Scottish Cup finals, then extended that record to four victories in five years.

John Hewitt’s Scottish Cup achievements are quite something. Ahead of the Dons semi-final showdown this weekend, John sat down with RedTV to share his memories of the competition, all the highs, plus a few lows along the way.
