Scott Booth was delighted his AFC Women side secured a big win over Montrose on Wednesday night, but he was more delighted when he finally heard the full-time whistle after a closely fought affair finally came to an end, with his team on the winning side.

“I didn’t really enjoy it to be honest!. I enjoyed the three points, 100%. I enjoyed the three points for the players because that really was not a pretty game of football, but it was exactly as we imagined it would be.

“I talked to the players before the game about the fact that the game was going to be 90% physicality because we knew how they would come out and what they would do to try and upset us, and 10% quality. From our perspective of building blocks, having the two wins, I was happy about. But I was happy that the players tonight matched the physicality as much as they possibly could, right from the very start of the game, and tried to play football. But as I say, it was difficult to get a sustained period of football like we had against Queen’s Park. But, I said, you win this game here, and no matter how the game looked, you still get the 3 points.

“This team is great because they put their bodies on the line. They want to win, they want to play, they want to get better, and they enjoy playing as a team. They’ve got togetherness. Even as a young team with new players coming in, you can start to see that there’s understanding within them as a group. Now, we can go on to our next game and keep building those building blocks in a really positive way, having those points in the back.

“I think we’re a long way off the end of the season, and there are a lot of games to be played yet. We know that. But I think we’ll keep getting better, and that’s something we can enjoy – the fact that we’ll keep getting better because we’ve got a group that is hungry to learn and get better.

“I think the new players coming in have really helped. They’ve raised the standards, but the players that have been here have raised their standards too. Everyone wants to learn and get as many wins as we can as a group, and that showed again tonight.

“There’s always a rivalry between Montrose and Aberdeen. A lot of the Montrose players have played at Aberdeen, and there are so many connections. It’s good there’s that rivalry. It elevates the game and makes it all taste better when you take the three points.”
