Scoring those goals is my job

Kevin Nisbet was on the mark with his second goal for the Dons as Aberdeen eased past The Spartans in the Premier Sports Cup. Nisbet was in the right place at the right time to make it 2-0, a goal he was delighted with.

“They’re the best ones to score, you don’t really do much work, just stand in the six yard box and tap it in! I probably should have had a few before that, but it’s just about continuing to get into the right areas and I know the boys will create chances.

“Scoring those goals is my job. I relish a gaffer giving me that responsibility, putting the pressure on me to go and perform, go and score goals and I think that’s when I play my best football, when I start to feel sharper, start to feel fitter. I was involved a lot in the game today compared to other games and that’s just down to sharpness from getting game time.

“I do a lot of extra work with Peter Leven, and in the gym just to get myself that little bit sharper. It’ll come, so I’m just delighted I’m still scoring goals while I’m getting fitter, and it’ll only get better from here.”

Although the Dons have a perfect record of 11 wins from 11 games this term, Nisbet is quick to point out there is plenty more work to in store to become the team they want to be.

“I think we’re a team that are a work in progress, each game we’re getting better and we need to drive ourselves to get better. We’re not by any means the finished article, but you can see we do stuff in the training ground that comes off in the games.

“The signs are good so far. If you’ve won 11 out of 11 and getting to semi-finals it’s great, but we’ll just take it game by game. We’ll sit down and we’ll look at what we can improve. That’s something that the gaffer’s been good at, keeping us level-headed and always looking to strive to be better.

“It’s a really good place to be around, you come in every day looking forward to training, looking forward to seeing the boys, it’s just a great family club. It’s probably one of the best groups I’ve been involved in. We do stuff after training, the boys don’t just rush home afterwards, they always sit around and have a laugh and so it’s a perfect place to be for me.”

With Leighton Clarkson fit again and Duk closing in on a return, there is ferocious competition for places in the Aberdeen side, something Nisbet welcomes.

“I think the level of competition is healthy. You can see that in training, the boys drive each other, standards are high. I’m delighted for Ester, coming on and being involved in a goal. He puts a lot of work into the game for us, he’s not really been that lucky in front of goal, so that will do his confidence good. We’ve got Duk to come back as well, he’s looking fitter and sharper every session, so there will be a lot of competition for places. You need to go and keep your jersey and that can only be good for the team.”
