Everyone's enjoying coming in every day

Nicky Devlin made the 500th start of his career in Aberdeen’s 2-0 win over Kilmarnock and as befits a player of such experience, after the game he was quick to counsel that while Aberdeen’s start to the season has been impressive, that’s all it is – a start.

“Everyone’s enjoying the way things are going. Everyone’s enjoying coming in every day to train, the games can’t come quick enough for us when you’ve got this bit of momentum, but let’s remember we’re three games into a 38-game season. We’re enjoying it just now, but we know things can turn very quickly. Football can turn in one result. We know we’ve still got a lot to do.

“It’s very early days under the new manager, but when you win as many games as we have recently, that’s going to get that feelgood factor going. We have to try and use that. I know myself playing against Aberdeen, it’s a hard place to come and get results when Aberdeen are playing well and when the crowd is behind them.

“It does make such a difference putting nine points on the board this early as well. It took us a long time to get to this point last year. It’s a good place to be just now but I think most dressing rooms are good places to be when you’re winning. We’ve got good players in there, good characters so that maybe when it doesn’t go so well, we’ll still be okay.”

Pape Guèye was the goalscoring hero, but as Nicky says, he is just one member of what is looking like an impressive firing line for the Dos with the addition of Kevin Nisbet on Saturday.

“Pape’s goals were really good. His second header was brilliant because it was almost like a wrestling match to see who got to the ball first. He’s been brilliant. He’s such a threat, especially in those set pieces for us. I think that’s two goals off corners now, one off open. Hopefully he can continue that form.

“I’ve played with Kevin before, he came on loan when I was at Ayr United when he was a young boy, I think he was only 17 or 18. Everyone in Scotland knows his finishing is second to none. Hopefully, if we can create chances for him, he’ll score goals for us.

“He adds another dimension to the team just now because, although Ester never got his goal on Saturday, the work he puts in for the team allows others to maybe score goals at times. He’s very unselfish and it allows others to look good. We’ve got him, Pape got his goals, we’ve got Kevin now, Peter’s done really well since he’s come in. We’ve got options now in that area and it’s just good to have that kind of strength in depth.”
