Red Matchday 2024/25 Information
A new look Red Matchday magazine will be on sale from the AFC Club Shop and from the sellers in and around the ground. Throughout the season we will have the biggest and best interviews with the first team squad members.
This week there is a special interview with Fletcher Boyd:
As footballing weeks go, there aren’t many who’ve had better ones than Fletcher Boyd at the end of last season. Winning the Youth league at Rangers on the Friday, making a first team debut on the Sunday at Hibs, scoring in that game, beating Celtic in the youth league in your first proper game at Pittodrie on the Monday, then making your senior first-team home debut on the Wednesday – scoring again, obviously.
“People started recognising me after those games, which was nice. It was a bit weird though, because I don’t actually have a signature, so I just had to come up with something when they wanted autographs!”
“Scott Anderson phoned me on my way home after the Rangers game on the Friday, and just told me that I’d be involved in the first team squad. I was a bit shocked to be fair, because I wasn’t really thinking about anything like that after just winning the U18 league, so getting told then was a good feeling.
“Staying overnight with the team before the Hibs game was different because I’ve not stayed away before playing a game in Scotland before. Then Peter told me I was going to be on the bench.
“The game just went really well for us. When it was 2-0, I wasn’t too sure if I’d get a game, but then when the third goal went in I thought, ‘Right I could probably get on here!’ Peter told me to just go on, play my game, be confident. It didn’t help that my for first touch, I took the corner and it was a bad effort! But then I got the ball after that and played a pass, that kind of settled me down. The reception from the Aberdeen fans was great as well. I didn’t expect it, because I didn’t even think they’d know who I was!
“For the goal, I got the ball from Stefan Gartenmann, and then I passed it to Shinnie and then the next thing I know, I’d run up the pitch and scored! I can’t even really remember it, it’s like a blur. As Ester crossed it, I watched it coming to me and I was thinking, ‘No way, no way, no way!’ And then I’d scored!
“I didn’t know what to do to celebrate, because there were so many fans there – it’s very different to scoring with the 18s in an empty ground. Duk just grabbed me and I was on the ground and then all the boys piled on top, that was a fantastic moment. It didn’t hurt, I just tasted the grass a bit! Then at the end, the fans are all singing my name, I’m kind of a shy person, so that stuff is a bit strange.”
There is also a feature with Nicky Devlin:
“One of the hardest things the new boys have to learn, and quickly, is pressure playing for a club like Aberdeen. There is pressure on the club to be successful, the fans want to be successful. To play for a club like Aberdeen is brilliant that’s what you want, that pressure. New players have to adapt to that quickly.
“The good thing for us is we started competitive games three weeks after we’d been back, games where we had to win. There were no excuses not to win those games. They got that experience very early on as a new player and it can only stand them in good stead.”
Plus, all the usual in-depth stats and history articles and photos from the AFC archives with new features and columnists.
