I think we're controlling games a bit more now
Nicky Devlin was full of praise for Scott Anderson and the coaching staff for picking things up for the Dons after Peter Leven went into hospital on Friday night.
“All the preparation was done both beforehand, and that’s credit to Pete, to Scotty, to Jonny, Sammy, everyone that’s chipped in to help. On a matchday it’s just down to doing whatever we’ve been working on all week with Peter, and we managed to do that for spells today. It’s not an easy position for Scotty and the guys to come in and have to have to do that, and they were brilliant today.
“It’s always good to keep clean sheets and I think we’re controlling games a wee bit more now, we have a lot more possession and I think that’s probably the reason behind it to be honest. We’re maybe not as not as open as when we were when we were going on poor runs. It was really pleasing to get another win on the board.
“We’ve seen Peter after the game on Zoom, it was good to see him in good spirits and fingers crossed everything goes goes well for him because he has been in a bit of discomfort for the last wee while. Fingers crossed he’s back for next Sunday.
“We want to finish on a high if we can because in the league campaign, we’ve come up way short of what we wanted to be. It’s frustrating because I think at times this year, we’ve shown we can be a good side. We’ve not showed enough and that’s why we are where we are in the league table. You deserve to be wherever you finish in the league.
“I’ve played 50 games this season, which is a lot, but if you offer me that amount of games every season because you’re going to be playing European competitions and going deep in the cups, I’ll happily take that.
“It’s obviously been difficult at times when the schedule was constant midweek games. It takes its toll on players and you’ve probably seen that form has gone up and down throughout the season but if we’re wanting to talk about too many games, we’re looking for excuses to be honest.
“For most of the games this year we’ve had enough on the park to go out and win the games if we perform, but ultimately we’ve just not performed enough. The top teams are able to cope, they go again when they’ve got a game midweek and on Sunday.
“We’ve not really been able to get a consistent run until maybe the last five, six weeks when we went back to back with clean sheets but as a football player, you want to play games. We’ve had some great moments in Europe this year and if that doesn’t get us going for the start of next season and making sure we’re back in those competitions then nothing will to be honest. We had some unbelievable moments in Europe and some results were good and if you don’t want more of that going forward, then you’re probably not at the right club.”
